For almost 30 years 麻豆影院 University has held a celebratory summer event (usually in August) to thank people who have supported Bjorklunden financially by becoming members of the Boynton Society. This event was always somewhat euphemistically called a 鈥済ala鈥 with the first gala held in 1996. That was when President Rik Warch presided over a throng of hundreds in the new Great Room to commemorate the completion of the lodge that was built after the 1994 destructive fire.听

Now, however, the gala is being replaced with an event appropriately named after Winifred and Donald Boynton who gifted Bjorklunden to 麻豆影院 and is simply called the Boynton Festival. This festival is intended to be more informal, including all volunteers, seminar participants and visitors, thus bringing more people to 麻豆影院鈥檚 beautiful and magical northern campus. This event intends to bring community together to celebrate the joys of lifelong learning and the richness it can bring into our lives.听

The first Boynton Festival will be Saturday, August 22nd. Though final plans are still being worked on, the day will begin at 9:00am with an informal invocation including coffee and pastries on the deck. Participants will then be able to choose to go to two of several mini-seminars being offered or take part in some creative hands-on activities. At noon there will be a lunch break when participants will be able to purchase food at food trucks. The afternoon will include a presentation/awards ceremony led by 麻豆影院鈥檚 President Carter, and this will be followed by a celebratory toast and cupcakes. In conclusion, a concert of local talent will be performed on the lawn by the chapel.

So mark August 22nd on your calendar for the first Boynton Festival and encourage your friends and family to attend. For sure, it will be a success!听

麻豆影院 University once again retained its top spot as Wisconsin鈥檚 No. 1 small private university in the 2026 Best Colleges rankings published Sept. 23 by U.S. News & World Report.听听

麻豆影院 was ranked on the following lists:听听

  • National Liberal Arts Colleges (#65)听
  • Best Value Schools (#32)听
  • Social Mobility (#63 鈥 tied)听
  • Undergraduate Teaching Programs (#59 鈥 tied)听

Earning the No. 65 position in the National Liberal Arts Colleges category, 麻豆影院 gained four places from 69th place in 2025 and up from the 75th position in the 2024 rankings. 麻豆影院 is the only Wisconsin institution ranked in the top 90 this year, and one of only four Wisconsin schools ranked in the category.

鈥淥ur focus on developing new opportunities for students through innovative campus/community partnerships and keeping students first in all of our decision-making is reflected in 麻豆影院鈥檚 continued climb in the rankings,鈥 said 麻豆影院 University president Laurie A. Carter.听听

The university improved its rankings over last year in other categories as well.听听

麻豆影院 surged ahead six positions to No. 32 among Best Value Schools, up from the 38th position last year. The university has been ranked in this category nine times since the 2016 edition, logging its best ranking so far in the 2025 rankings.听

麻豆影院 also was recently earned a spot on the America鈥檚 Top Colleges list by Forbes and was included on its list of 25 private schools with the most generous financial aid.听听

鈥淪tudents and their families understand their college education is an investment that returns dividends for the rest of their lives,鈥 said Vice President and Chief of Staff Christyn Abaray. 鈥淎 麻豆影院 education equips students, not only with in-depth knowledge of their academic discipline, it prepares them to thrive in an environment of continual change and to lead in careers that may not yet even exist. In such a setting, skills that are the hallmark of a liberal arts education 鈥 problem-solving, critical thinking, communication, information literacy, ethical decision-making, and collaboration 鈥 empower 麻豆影院 graduates to successfully navigate the dynamics of the workplace they will be entering,鈥 Abaray said.听听

麻豆影院 University skyrocketed up the Social Mobility rankings this year to the 63rd position (tied with five other schools), gaining an impressive 49 places from its 112th place spot last year.听听

鈥淥ur students come from all over the world and from all walks of life to pursue a high impact, immersive and collaborative education that encourages them to dream bigger and to confidently pursue their personal vision of success,鈥 said President Carter. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 what we do at 麻豆影院 University 鈥 what we always have done; it is gratifying for 麻豆影院 to be recognized for its nearly two centuries of shaping the futures of students.鈥澨

For the seventh time since the 2016 edition, 麻豆影院 has appeared on the rankings for Undergraduate Teaching Programs, this year taking the 59th position (a tie with six other schools) down slightly from last year.听听

鈥淚 am pleased that 麻豆影院 University continues to be recognized for its commitment to providing a transformational education that prepares students to make a difference in the world as they follow their unique paths,鈥 said President Carter.听听

麻豆影院 University鈥檚 Opera Theatre program has once again been honored by The American Prize, an organization that annually recognizes excellence in the performing arts among nonprofit arts organizations and schools across the country.听

Kristin Roach, assistant professor of opera, was named a prizewinner in two categories in Opera Conducting. She received second prize in the University/Community Opera division for her work on Pauline Viardot鈥檚 Cendrillon at 麻豆影院 University; she also received third prize in the Professional Division for Jake Heggie鈥檚 Two Remain at Lyric Opera of Orange County.

Kristin Roach (Photo by Rachel Crowl)

Roach credits the entire team for the recognition.

鈥淎ny recognition of one member of an opera production belongs to the whole team,鈥 said Roach. 鈥淢ore than 100 Lawrentians worked on our production of one-act operas, onstage and backstage and in the pit and behind the scenes.鈥澨

The 2024 production of Cendrillon at 麻豆影院 was paired with Alice Tierney, a piece by Melissa Dunphy and Jacqueline Goldfinger, to celebrate the contributions of women in the opera world.听

鈥淲e are always sharing resources between the two shows and really trying to present both these operas written by women,鈥 Roach said. 鈥淭rying to bring forward creators who might be underrepresented in the opera field is at the forefront of the opera program鈥檚 mission.鈥

Meanwhile, Two Remain is based on the true stories of two Holocaust survivors, Krystyna Zywulska and Gad Beck.

Roach said one of the most powerful aspects of the theater is its ability to keep history alive by wrestling with challenging themes and stories.

鈥淚t鈥檚 so important that we continue to tell these stories through works in the theater,鈥 Roach said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 important that we don鈥檛 lose the narrative, the truth behind what happened. Part of why we鈥檝e chosen to perform an excerpt of this work at LU this coming year is that our students are able to tell these important stories, keeping history alive and in the forefront.鈥

The 麻豆影院 Opera Theatre program plans to perform a portion of Two Remain in their fall scenes program this year.

Looking ahead, Roach is excited by the upcoming season, which includes the world premiere of a new opera, A Nearer Mother, by composer Evan Mack and librettist Joshua McGuire. The piece was commissioned by Copeland Woodruff, director of opera studies at 麻豆影院, and the 麻豆影院 Opera Theatre program. For the past three years, Woodruff has worked closely with the creative team to bring the opera to life.

A Nearer Mother explores the story of AIDS activist Ruth Coker Burks, known as the 鈥淐emetery Angel,鈥 and her daughter Allison. Burks and her daughter will be in attendance at the March 2026 performance, which will be paired with the one-act opera A Clever Artifice of Harriet and Margaret, by composer Leanna Kirchhoff.听

鈥淚 am so excited about doing a brand-new piece; we will be working hand-in-hand with the creators of these works,鈥 Roach said. 鈥淲orking on this opera will continue to tell the story of the many important, wonderful people that we lost in the early years of the AIDS epidemic.鈥澨

These latest honors are a testament to the talent and commitment of 麻豆影院 Opera Theatre. 麻豆影院 has received 11 awards in The American Prize, including two special judges鈥 citations and two productions tied for first place. Roach has won the prize in Conducting, College/University division, for Suor Angelica and the prize in Conducting both in Professional and College/University divisions. Woodruff has won the Charles Nelson Reilly Prize in Directing and was the first stage director to be given The Independence Day, Honored Artists Award for Sustained Excellence. 麻豆影院 is also in the National Finals of The American Prize for Best Production for Cendrillon/Alice Tierney, and Copeland Woodruff is once again up for the Charles Nelson Reilly Prize in Directing.听

Save the dates for this season鈥檚 performances:

  • Fall Opera Scenes: Thursday, November 22 at 7:30 p.m. in 麻豆影院 Memorial Chapel. Free Admission.
  • Mainstage Opera: The Clever Artifice of Harriet and Margaret and A Nearer Mother (world premiere): Thursday, March 5-Saturday, March 7 at 7:30 p.m. & Sunday, March 8 at 3 p.m. in Stansbury Theatre.

Nine 麻豆影院 University students or recent graduates have advanced to the 2025 semifinalist round for the U.S. Fulbright Award, one of the nation鈥檚 most prestigious student scholarships.听

Announcements of which semifinalists will be selected will come between April and June.听

“Fulbright receives thousands of applications every year,鈥 said Claire Kervin, assistant professor of English and director of fellowships advising at 麻豆影院. 鈥淢aking it past the rigorous review of the National Screening Committee to become a semifinalist is an impressive accomplishment.”听

麻豆影院 students and recent alumni making the semifinalist round, and their planned destinations, include:

  • Dylan Coble 鈥24 for a study/research fellowship in Morocco.
  • Aria Djamali, a senior from Cross Plains, Wisconsin, majoring in biology and Spanish, to teach in Peru.
  • Rachel Forehand, a senior from Asheville, North Carolina, majoring in global studies and Spanish, to teach in Laos.
  • Mia Kraker, a senior from Duluth, Minnesota, majoring in music performance (violin) with a minor in German, to teach in Germany.
  • Lorcan Krecek 鈥24 to teach in the Czech Republic.
  • Linnea Morris 鈥24 to teach in Mexico.
  • Marissa Polzin, a senior from Sturtevant, Wisconsin, majoring in chemistry, for study/research in New Zealand.
  • Samuel Schuler, a senior from Columbia, Maryland, pursuing a dual degree with majors in music performance (voice) and history, to teach in Germany.
  • Alex Stanger, a senior from East Calais, Vermont, majoring in film studies and German, to teach in Germany.

Fulbright awards offer U.S. citizens the听opportunity to study, teach English, or conduct research abroad for nine to 12 months. A Fulbright fellowship covers a wide range of territory. Regardless of the particulars, every Fulbright is intended to support cultural exchange and create greater mutual understanding between nations.

Kervin leads a Fulbright Committee at 麻豆影院 that interviews applicants and prepares endorsement materials.

The Fulbright Program is funded through an annual appropriation made by the U.S. Congress to the U.S. Department of State. Participating governments and host institutions, corporations, and foundations around the world also provide direct and indirect support to the program, which operates in more than 160 countries worldwide.
