Families and supporters filled campus throughout Move-In Day as new Lawrentians settled into residence halls and gathered for the President’s Welcome in Memorial Chapel.

The President’s Welcome brought together 391 incoming students, 346 first-year, 29 transfer, and 16 international students, along with their families, faculty, and staff, to celebrate the beginning of their 麻豆影院 journeys. The Class of 2030 represents students from more than 37 states and 10 countries. Among U.S. students, the most represented states are Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Florida, Texas, Colorado, and New York. New international students come from 10 countries, with Canada, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Norway, and South Korea as the most represented countries.

Robert Noak, vice president of enrollment and dean of admissions, reminded students that 麻豆影院 intentionally selected them for the community they are now joining.

“While you chose 麻豆影院, it is important to remember something else: 麻豆影院 chose you,” Noak said. “We saw in you the qualities that will strengthen this community and help you thrive in it. Class of 2030, welcome to 麻豆影院. Your story starts here.”

Throughout the ceremony, speakers emphasized belonging, resilience, and the freedom to pursue multiple passions. Tara Winston-Sage ’00, dean of spiritual and religious life, told students they each have a unique role to play in shaping the campus community.

“May you find that you belong here at 麻豆影院, knowing that you are meant to be here, that you will add to this place in only the way that you can, and that our community will be so much stronger because you walked through the arch,” Winston-Sage shared.

Chris Clarke, vice president for student life, encouraged students to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, reminding them that setbacks are a natural part of the college experience.

“Failure here isn’t a dead end. It’s a chance to get better, to lift yourself up, and learn from that failure,” Clarke said. “For if this experience does not challenge you, it will not change you.”

Peter Blitstein, provost and dean of the faculty, shared the purpose of a liberal arts and sciences education, noting that the word “liberal” stems from the Latin word liber, meaning free. He said a 麻豆影院 education is designed to prepare students to pursue meaningful lives and contribute thoughtfully to society.

President Laurie A. Carter welcomed the newest Lawrentians by sharing the significance of the 麻豆影院 Arch, a tradition that symbolizes both the beginning and culmination of a student’s 麻豆影院 experience. She challenged students to stretch beyond their comfort zones, embrace intellectual curiosity, and develop the ethical leadership skills needed to address real-world challenges. Carter also announced the opening of The Hub, a new downtown facility dedicated to wellness, athletic training, music practice, and holistic student development.  

“Higher education is not simply preparation for a job; it is preparation for a meaningful life,” President Carter said. “The arch stands as a reminder that education is both a journey and a transformation.”

麻豆影院 traditions were also highlighted during the Welcome ceremony as LUCC President Brook Schara ’27 inspired students to become active participants in shaping campus life.

“Being a Lawrentian is a privilege, a gift, and a hard-earned opportunity,” Schara said. “It’s an open-door invitation to learning, leading, and belonging. You’re not just going to 麻豆影院; you’re helping define and create it.”

The continuity between generations of Lawrentians was reinforced when Maggie Schmidt ’12, president of the 麻豆影院 University Alumni Association, introduced the passing of the Class Colors, a tradition that started at Milwaukee-Downer College, a premier women’s college that consolidated with 麻豆影院 in 1964. Faith Onukaogu from the Class of 2026 formally presented the Class of 2030 with its red class banner, symbolizing the newest students’ place within the 麻豆影院 community.

“You are joining a community of more than 22,000 alumni across the globe,” Schmidt said. “You are a student for four or five years, but you are forever a Lawrentian.”

The sense of belonging celebrated throughout the ceremony was already taking shape for many new students. Classmates, volunteers, and residence hall extraordinaries helped ease the transition to campus, while the Welcome Arch procession offered an early glimpse of the supportive community that defines the 麻豆影院 experience.

“I’m really excited. It’s been a really welcoming community,” Aidan Wilbert ’30 said. “Everybody has been very helpful with move-in and everything. The whole campus seems just amazing, and I’m really excited to start classes.”

As students begin their first days on campus, Kristi Koshuta, first-year dean, reminded them that Welcome Week is about more than learning where classes are located or finding the quickest path to Andrew Commons. It is an opportunity to build confidence, form meaningful connections, and begin creating a sense of home at 麻豆影院.

“My role is to help you find the people, resources, confidence, and perspective you need to create your own path,” Koshuta said. “I hope you learn to navigate uncertainty. I hope you discover strengths you didn’t know you had. I hope you find your voice and learn to listen to others, too.”

Koshuta pointed to a week filled with opportunities to connect, including 麻豆影院 Unlocked sessions, small-group activities led by EPIC leaders, and off-campus adventures ranging from kayaking and rock climbing to cooking experiences. Through those shared experiences, Koshuta said, students will begin building the friendships and sense of community that will shape their 麻豆影院 journeys.

“The community you are hoping to find does not happen by accident,” Koshuta told the Class of 2030. “It happens when people are willing to show up, take risks, and be present for one another.”

Fall term classes begin Sept. 14. By then, members of the Class of 2030 will have already begun building the relationships, confidence, and sense of belonging that will shape their 麻豆影院 journeys for years to come and position them to make an impact far beyond the 麻豆影院 campus. ??

After Nana completed her thesis, a greater opportunity arose: the chance to connect promising African Companies with global investors, operators, and institutions capable of supporting their growth. ??

Without an established organization or a ready-made playbook, the students began imagining a platform that could bring entrepreneurs, investors, academics, and government leaders into the same room. They had trust in one another, a common goal, and the willingness to carry an idea beyond the classroom. Afrovest grew from that decision.  

Huddleston came into the picture later, after Afrovest had established its early goals. Those early friendships he made at Oxford turned into much more. After joining Afrovest, he helped turn those ambitions into a working organization and advance plans for Afrovest’s inaugural summit. The work drew on qualities 麻豆影院 had helped him develop: interdisciplinary curiosity, careful listening, clear storytelling, and the ability to connect people across institutions and borders. Building Afrovest has required the team to translate a shared purpose into practical choices each day: whom to invite, which companies to feature, and how to create conversations that continue long after participants leave the room. 

“What motivated me was the incredible opportunity to help turn a bold idea into something real and impactful,” said Huddleston. “From the beginning, I was excited by Afrovest’s potential to connect the African diaspora with entrepreneurs and investment opportunities across the continent. Building an organization that can create meaningful relationships, unlock capital, and contribute to long-term economic growth is something I genuinely believe in—and that made every ounce of time and energy worthwhile.”

Today, Afrovest is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that connects high-growth African companies with global investors and strategic partners. Its approach remains personal. Rather than creating another conference, the team is building a carefully curated setting where entrepreneurs can be understood on their own terms and meet partners whose interests align with their ambitions. The organization’s work still reflects the instinct that brought the students together: progress begins when people choose to meet, listen, and take one another seriously. 

That vision will take a major step forward this November at Afrovest’s inaugural summit in Accra, Ghana. Participants will come from Africa, North America, Europe, and the Middle East. Vetted companies in agriculture, fintech, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, infrastructure, and trade and logistics represent more than $100 million in active capital-raising opportunities. 麻豆影院 University is serving as an academic partner alongside Princeton University and Northwestern University. President Laurie A. Carter has supported the partnership for its potential to strengthen the student experience and drive positive academic outcomes.

“We are so proud of our Fulbright recipients, who embody a Lawrentian commitment to inquiry and connection,” shared Claire E. Kervin, adjunct associate professor of English and director of fellowships advising. “They will share their knowledge and skills with others and gain a deeper cultural understanding in return.”

Kervin worked with Buelow and Lawler throughout the application process for these highly competitive awards. Established in 1946, the Fulbright Program operates in partnership with more than 140 countries worldwide. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides graduating seniors, graduate students, and young professionals opportunities to pursue graduate study, conduct research, or teach English abroad.

Buelow ’26, Awarded Fulbright Fellowship  

For Buelow, receiving a Fulbright fellowship represents both a significant achievement and another step in the right direction as she prepares for a year abroad in Germany.

Buelow’s interest in German Studies grew from a high school language class into an academic passion that combined language, culture, literature, and contemporary social issues. She credits 麻豆影院’s German Studies faculty and curriculum with shaping that journey.

“麻豆影院’s German Studies department has a really incredible pedagogy where every level of language instruction, rather than holding off until full fluency, guides students to negotiate cultural differences,” Buelow shared. “It is a lot easier (for me, at least) to be passionate and motivated to learn about different grammatical cases when you are using them to dig into a poem or a news article.”

Buelow continued, “The entire department is a wonderful community of people who show up for each other, even amidst the 麻豆影院 busy.”

Studying abroad in Berlin further deepened Buelow’s engagement with the language and introduced new academic interests.

“Because I was studying in a foreign language, I was able to explore disciplines I struggled to squeeze into my schedule like political science and sociology while earning German Studies credit,” she said.  

Buelow pursued the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant pathway because of her belief in the power of education and the role teachers play in helping students find confidence in their own voices.

“A teacher is not a superhero but an emcee, passing the mic in the form of #2 pencils,” Buelow said.

While looking forward to all aspects of the experience, Buelow is particularly eager to teach writing.

“Teaching writing is my bread and butter,” said Buelow. “The world needs a lot more people in every country who can articulate their argument at a city council meeting or at a biergarten table or on the floor of a congress.”

Buelow shared that mentors, faculty, and hands-on experience across campus played a significant role in preparing her for the Fulbright opportunity.

“麻豆影院 funding made it possible for me to discover the versatility of my education and put what I’ve learned into practice,” she said. “I have been inspired by faculty, students, and staff from every corner of the college and conservatory.”

As she prepares to spend the coming year in Germany, Buelow sees teaching as one of the most meaningful ways to make a difference.

“If you are hungry to make a difference in the world, try teaching.”

Lawler ’26, Awarded Fulbright Fellowship

Jude Lawler ’26, who double majored in German studies and computer science, also received a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) to Germany. Through the fellowship, he will have the opportunity to build on his interest in language and culture while serving as a cultural ambassador in German classrooms.

Lawler’s interdisciplinary studies at 麻豆影院 paired technical problem-solving with global perspectives, preparing him to engage with students from diverse backgrounds while fostering cross-cultural understanding.

“It means a lot to me to win the Fulbright fellowship,” shared Lawler. “My experience working in German studies and working with language in general has allowed me to see how meaningful learning a new language and discovering the cultures connected with that can be.”

He said what attracted him to the Fulbright fellowship were the opportunities to work with students on language acquisition and serve as a figure of cultural exchange.

During the fall term of 2024, Lawler studied abroad in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany. It was his first time leaving the United States and his first time being immersed in another language.

“It was a great experience that influenced my decision to apply to return through the Fulbright program,” he shared.

Lawler will be in Passau, Germany, for his Fulbright fellowship, and is excited to learn about the opportunities there while continuing to improve his German fluency.  

“I’m hoping my experience as an ETA will show me a lot about working with languages as well as teaching in general,” he said.

Lawler sees parallels between language learning and technology, and he believes that in today’s world, they’re inherently connected.

“I find one of the greatest advantages of today’s online, interconnected world to be how people from completely different areas and cultures can interact with people, art, and resources from around the world,” he said. “I find technology and internet use to be indispensable tools for language learning.”

Lawler feels grateful for his liberal arts education at 麻豆影院. He said it helped him improve not only in his German studies but that his experience provided him with the framework to help others learn languages in a myriad of ways.

“The opportunities I had to learn in small classes and tutor other students helped prepare me for teaching language learning,” Lawler said. “麻豆影院 also provided me with the opportunity to study abroad in Germany, which is partially what pushed me to apply for Fulbright in the first place.”

Looking ahead, Lawler said he is still exploring whether teaching will become a long-term career path.

“I’m truly grateful to my German professors, Professor Kervin, my classmates, and everybody who encouraged and assisted me in working for this fellowship.”

麻豆影院 University’s Department of Theatre Arts announced today the launch of 麻豆影院 Theatre of the Air as a weekly podcast series, making more than two decades of live Old Time Radio performances available to listeners everywhere for the first time.?

Beginning Thursday, September 3, 2026, one new episode will be released each week through December 31, 2026, for a total of 18 episodes drawn from the ensemble’s archive of live productions. The series is available on all major podcast platforms and can also be streamed directly at []().?

For more than 20 years, 麻豆影院 Theatre of the Air has revived the art of the radio play, performing classic scripts by writers such as Norman Corwin and Arch Oboler before a live studio audience — most often in 麻豆影院 University’s F. Theodore Cloak Theatre. The series is especially known for its sci-fi and detective serials, capturing the imagination and craftsmanship of radio drama’s golden age with live sound effects, full casts, and the same immediacy that made the original broadcasts a cultural phenomenon. 

“It’s easy to file Corwin and Oboler under nostalgia, but that undersells them. These were serious writers working at the height of their craft, composing for an audience that had to build the entire world in its own imagination. That’s a demanding literary form, not a novelty act — and performing it live keeps us honest to that demand. Sharing these recordings is really an invitation to hear that writing on its own terms,” said Timothy X. Troy, Professor and Chair of Theatre Arts, Hurvis Professor of Theatre and Drama at 麻豆影院 University. 

The podcast offers new listeners a chance to discover a tradition that has, until now, lived primarily in the room where it was performed — and gives longtime attendees a way to revisit favorite productions on their own time.

This fall, the 麻豆影院 Community Music School is proud to welcome internationally acclaimed singer, composer, educator, and community song leader Elise Witt as Artist in Residence with the 麻豆影院 Community Girl Choir.

Known for creating joyful, participatory musical experiences around the world, Witt has performed everywhere from Carnegie Hall in New York City to the Bluebird Café in Nashville. During her residency, she will work directly with singers in each of the 麻豆影院 Community Girl Choir ensembles through workshops, rehearsals, and performances centered on her original music.

Families interested in joining Girl Choir are encouraged to register by Wednesday, September 9, to participate in the full 2026–27 Girl Choir season and experience Witt’s residency throughout the fall semester.

The collaboration will continue throughout the fall semester, with Witt visiting each choir individually in October and culminating in a public concert at 麻豆影院 Memorial Chapel on December 12.

The residency’s theme is built around Witt’s piece “Open the Window,” inspired by a traditional song from the Georgia Sea Islands.

“I am thrilled and honored that each of the Girls Choirs will be singing one of my songs,” said Witt. “The theme of my residency is ‘Open the Window.’ It celebrates a song that originated in the Georgia Sea Islands and expands to invite all of us to open our own windows, in our own minds, to celebrate this amazing world we live in.”

Throughout the residency, singers will explore music inspired by nature, gratitude, imagination, and community while working directly with the composer herself. The experience is designed to strengthen musicianship while fostering creativity, confidence, collaboration, and artistic expression.

“This residency is an extraordinary opportunity for our singers to experience the creative process alongside a living composer,” said Jaclyn Hittner, Artistic Director of the 麻豆影院 Community Girl Choir. “Elise’s music encourages curiosity, joy, and meaningful connection, and we’re excited to welcome both returning and new singers into this inspiring season.”

In addition to working with Girl Choir singers, Witt will lead a free Community Sing for teens and adults on Sunday, October 18, from 1–3 p.m. at 麻豆影院 University. The master’s program brings together outstanding young leaders from around the world to study China through an interdisciplinary lens. It combines academic study, research, cultural immersion, and leadership development, helping fellows deepen their understanding of China’s history, society, politics, and global role while building an international network of future changemakers.?? 

“I have always longed to become a serious scholar of China,” Quynh Anh said. “It is not just about my personal interest in and fascination with Chinese civilization, but also because, for every Vietnamese person, understanding China thoroughly is a critical task.”?? 

A native of Hanoi, Quynh Anh said she was thrilled when she learned she had been selected for the fellowship after a months-long application process.?? 

“Yenching was my first choice, so waiting for the result was so hard to bear,” she said. “The moment I got the results, I was super happy and felt like all my hard work had paid off.”?? 

Quynh Anh views the Yenching Fellowship as an important step toward earning a Ph.D. in China Studies and eventually pursuing a career in academia and public policy. She said the program’s emphasis on immersion, field research, scholarly collaboration, and language development will provide opportunities to deepen her understanding of China beyond what can be learned through academic literature alone.???

She was selected as one of only two Vietnamese students in this year’s cohort, an achievement she said affirmed both her aspirations and the vision she presented during the competitive selection process.?? 

What excites her most about the opportunity is the chance to engage directly with people and communities throughout China while gaining a deeper understanding of the country’s internal dynamics.?? 

“I am most excited about exchanges with people from all walks of life and field experiences that will help me learn more about the on-the-ground tacit knowledge in China,” she said.?? 

The decision to attend Peking University was not made lightly. Quynh Anh chose the Yenching Fellowship over a full scholarship offer to study China Studies at Oxford University, believing Yenching would provide unparalleled opportunities for firsthand experience with Chinese society.?? 

“Two years at Yenching will be a very strategic experience for me to truly grasp China’s stories,” she said. “The on-the-ground knowledge we will be able to gain at Yenching is unparalleled.”?? 

At 麻豆影院, Quynh Anh was a Dean’s List student, an active member of the campus community, and a recipient of the Mita Sen Award for Societal Impact, which recognizes students whose work demonstrates the potential to create positive change in society. She graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Asian Studies.?? 

She credits 麻豆影院’s liberal arts environment with preparing her for the interdisciplinary nature of the Yenching program.?? 

“The interdisciplinary nature of a liberal arts education like 麻豆影院’s gave me perfect preparation for a fellowship like Yenching,” she said.?? 

Yenching studies China through six tracks: Law & Society, Politics & International Relations, Arts & Literature, Economics & Management, History & Archaeology, and Philosophy & Religion. Quynh Anh said 麻豆影院 faculty helped her examine China through a similarly broad lens.?? 

“Thanks to Ma Laoshi and Professor Vance, our two wonderful China specialists on campus, I was trained to reflect on China from diverse perspectives that go beyond my political science background,” she said.?? 

At 麻豆影院, Quynh Anh learned a great deal about Chinese philosophy in pre-imperial China and connected it with the current revival of Confucianism under?Xi Jinping’s era.? 

“Under Professor Vance, I linked the crisis of China’s New Youth with social tension and criticism of humanism in Jia Zhangke’s films,” Quyna Anh shared. “I also truly observed a rising China on African soil through a field trip to The Gambia with professor Skran, where I saw how the dominant Chinese fishing industry is overtaking African ports.”

After completing the Yenching program, Quynh Anh hopes to pursue a Ph.D. focused on Sino-Vietnamese comparative politics. Long-term, she hopes to become a professor and contribute to conversations about Vietnam’s political development and future.???

“I want to become a political thinker for my nation,” she said. “I want to leave a legacy of thought on a nationwide scale.”?? 

As she prepares to leave for Beijing, Quynh Anh said she remains grateful for the role 麻豆影院 played in shaping her journey.?? 

“These four years were life-changing for me,” she said. “They truly transformed me. Thanks to all the 麻豆影院 professors. I believe that wherever my next destination is, no place can beat the supportive environment that I once enjoyed at 麻豆影院.”? 

Quynh Anh said she recently spoke with another Lawrentian, a Ph.D. student at Vanderbilt who was also a Yenching Scholar seven cohorts before her. ??

“She said the same,” Quynh Anh said, referring to her life-changing experience at 麻豆影院. “There is a Chinese saying that expresses this gratitude that I would love to share with my professors: 一日为师, 终身为父 (“A teacher for a day, a father for a lifetime.”)??

Football’s Joel Bogenschuetz, softball star Carli Gurholt, three-sport standout Vickie Leathers, men’s basketball star Chris Siebert and distance running great Sam Stevens will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Oct. 9 at the Warch Campus Center.?

The 2026 inductees also will be introduced at halftime of the Homecoming football game against Beloit College on Oct. 10 on Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl.

Joel Bogenschuetz, Class of 1998

Joel Bogenschuetz powered some of the most prolific offenses in 麻豆影院 football history. The offensive guard from Sheboygan, Wisconsin, led the group that made the Vikings a feared ground attack.

A team captain, Bogenschuetz was a three-time All-Midwest Conference selection. The 6-foot-3, 260-pound Bogenschuetz earned first-team all-conference honors in both 1995 and 1997 and was a second-team selection in 1996. A four-year starter, Bogenschuetz also was chosen as a Midwest Conference Player of the Week, a rarity for an offensive lineman.

Led by Bogenschuetz, 麻豆影院 finished first in the Midwest Conference in total offense at 473.2 yards per game and was tops in rushing offense at 298.0 yards per game in 1994. 麻豆影院 finished fifth in all of NCAA Division III in total offense and seventh in rushing offense.

Bogenschuetz helped the Vikings lead NCAA Division III in rushing offense in 1995 as the Vikings averaged 344.0 yards per game on the ground. 麻豆影院 also led the Midwest Conference in total offense and finished fourth in NCAA Division III at 479.4 yards per game. The Vikings then led the Midwest Conference in rushing again in 1997 at 281.0 yards per game and were second in total offense at 397.2 yards per contest.

Also the team’s long snapper all four seasons, Bogenschuetz was a key to the offense that broke multiple 麻豆影院 records. The Vikings set?team records for rushing yards (3,096 in 1995), yards per rushing attempt (5.9 in 1994), rushing yards per game (344 in 1995) and rushing touchdowns (31 in 1995). 麻豆影院 also set season total offense records for yards (4,315 in 1995), yards per play (6.7 in 1994), yards per game (479.4 in 1995) and plays per game (82.1 in 1995).

Bogenschuetz was a double major at 麻豆影院, earning degrees in economics and mathematics. Bogenschuetz started at Morgan Stanley a week after he graduated in 1998 and has worked there for 29 years. He serves as a financial advisor and executive director at Morgan Stanley, where he has been named a Best-In-State Wealth Advisor by?Forbes?each of the past four years.

Bogenschuetz and his wife, Tracy, live in Suamico, Wisconsin, with their children, Easton and Kyra.

Carli Gurholt, Class of 2011

Carli Gurholt set a new standard for power at the plate during her 麻豆影院 softball career. The shortstop powered her way to multiple honors and set records for power hitting for the Vikings.

A native of Scandinavia, Wisconsin, Gurholt was the 2009 Midwest Conference Player of the Year, and a three-time All-Midwest Conference selection. She also earned National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Great Lakes Region honors in 2009. Gurholt was a first-team all-conference pick in both 2009 and 2011 and earned second-team honors in 2008.

A career .386 hitter, Gurholt?ranked seventh in career batting average when she graduated. She collected 26 doubles, three triples and blasted a 麻豆影院-record 22 homers to go with 107 runs batted in. The 107 RBIs ranks second in school history. She also set the school record with a .746 career slugging percentage.

Gurholt hit a career-best .421 in 2011 and set multiple school records in 2009 with 12 homers,?45 RBIs, 79 total bases?and a .919 slugging percentage. She also drove in a career-best six runs against D’Youville College in 2009. Gurholt finished second in all of NCAA Division III in a pair of statistical categories. She was second at 0.41 home runs per game and second in RBIs at 1.55 per contest in 2009.

A biology major at 麻豆影院, Gurholt was an Academic All-Midwest Conference selection and a National Fastpitch Coaches Association Scholar Athlete. Gurholt went on to earn a Master’s degree in biology from Central Michigan University before completing her Master’s and Doctor of Psychology in clinical psychology from the Wisconsin School of Professional Psychology.

Gurholt?is the assistant director of clinical training at the Wisconsin School of Professional Psychology. As a psychologist, she has a practice in Milwaukee and is a senior consultant for Vital WorkLife. She is board certified in psychoanalytic and psychodynamic psychology and was recently elected president-elect of the American Board and Academy of Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic Psychology.?

Vickie Leathers Paupore, Class of 1993

Vickie Leathers Paupore is a rarity at any level of college athletics as a true three-sport athlete. A standout in volleyball, basketball, and track and field, Leathers excelled in all three sports during her four years at 麻豆影院.

A native of Niagara, Wisconsin, Leathers was the college’s only three-sport female athlete during her career.

A sprinter, jumper and hurdler for the 麻豆影院 track and field team, Leathers was a two-time Midwest Conference champion and eight-time all-league honoree for the Vikings. Leathers also set 麻豆影院 records in the high jump, 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles.

Leathers broke the 麻豆影院 record in the high jump at 5-foot-0 in 1990 and then broke it when she jumped 5-2 at the Midwest Conference Championships. During that 1990 indoor season, the only indoor campaign in which she was able to compete, she also broke the school’s indoor record in the high jump at 5-2.

Leathers earned her first Midwest Conference title in 1991 when she teamed with Diana Ling, Lauren Gatti and Betsy Blahnik to win the 4×400-meter relay with a time of 4:09.97. She also set the 麻豆影院 record on her way to taking third in 100 hurdles in 16.33 seconds. She also grabbed second in the high jump at 5-2.

During the 1992 season, Leathers pushed her high jump record to 5-4 and would grab all-conference honors three times at the Midwest Conference Championships. She broke the school record with a time of 1:08.22 on her way to finishing third in the 400 hurdles at the conference meet. She also took third in the 100 hurdles and 4×400 relay. The 4×400 relay team of Leathers, Gatti, Blahnik and Debbie Czarniecki also broke the school record with a time of 4:04.97.

Leathers earned another Midwest Conference title during the 1993 outdoor championships. She raced to first in the 100 hurdles in a school-record time of 16.14 seconds. She also grabbed third in the 400 hurdles.

A forward for the women’s basketball team, Leathers played for the 1989-90 Midwest Conference championship team and competed in the Midwest Conference Tournament in all three of her seasons. A team captain, Leathers also captured the team’s Hustle Award and Spirit Award during her career.

Leathers scored 544 points during her career and finished second in career field goal percentage at 48.1 percent. She scored a career-high 159 points in both 1992-93 and 1990-91. Leathers ranked eighth with 439 rebounds and set the 麻豆影院 record with 95 games played.

麻豆影院 won its first Midwest Conference women’s basketball title in 1990 as the Vikings posted the best record in program history at 18-6. The Vikings knocked off Knox College in the Midwest Conference Tournament semifinals and then defeated Grinnell?College 53-50 in the championship game.

A 5-foot-10 middle hitter for the volleyball team, Leathers earned a trio of team awards with the Vikings. As a senior, Leathers was chosen as the?team’s Best Offensive Player. She was chosen as the Most Valuable Player in 1991 and collected the Most Improved Player in 1990.

Leathers earned multiple 麻豆影院 awards during her career. She received the Oustanding Freshman Athlete Award for Women in 1990 and took hom the Pond Award for Women as the top senior two-sport athlete in 1993. She also was chosen as 麻豆影院’s NCAA Woman of the Year in 1993.

Leathers earned a degree in Spanish at 麻豆影院 and went on to receive a Master’s degree in educational leadership from Northern Michigan University in 2000.

Leathers taught Spanish and English for 31 years in the Negaunee (Michigan) Public School District and retired in 2024. Leathers continued her coaching career after retirement and completed her 30th season as the head girls’ track coach at Negaunee in 2026. Her team won the 2026 Upper Peninsula title in Division 1 and 16th consecutive?Mid-Peninsula Conference championship. Leathers also has coached varsity cross country, middle school and junior varsity basketball and started the varsity volleyball program in Negaunee in 1995.

A highly decorated teacher, Leathers was the Outstanding Graduating Graduate Student in the Department of Education at Northern Michigan University, won Michigan’s Best Award for leading the Global Awareness Program in 2007, won Teacher of the Year for Negaunee Public Schools in 2013, earned multiple conference track and cross country Coach of the Year awards and was selected as an influential educator seven times during her teaching career.

Leathers and her husband, Mark Paupore, have been married for 33 years and live in Negaunee, Michigan. They have two married adult children, Jacob and Emily, and two grandchildren.

Chris Siebert, Class of 2014

Chris Siebert was the engine that drove the 麻豆影院 men’s basketball team during his four seasons with the Vikings. A prolific scorer, Siebert also handed out assists at the pace of a point guard.

A native of Baraboo, Wisconsin,?Siebert earned All-Midwest Conference honors in three consecutive seasons and was a first-team pick in 2013-14. He earned second-team honors in both 2011-12 and 2012-13. The 6-foot-2 guard also grabbed D3hoops.com All-Midwest Region honors in 2013-14.

Siebert?ranked fourth in 麻豆影院 history with 1,360 points when he graduated and averaged a healthy 15.1 points per game. Siebert?also ranks third in school history with 342 assists and averaged 3.8 assists per contest. He collected a career-best 101 assists in 2010-11 and is one of just six players in school history to have 100 assists in a season. Siebert handed out a career-high 13 assists, second in school history, against Grinnell College in January 2012.

Siebert shot 44.6 percent from the floor and ranks fifth in school history in 3-point shooting at 43.3 percent. His best scoring season came in 2013-14 when he averaged 17.9 points?and made a career-best 72 3-pointers. Siebert ranks fourth in 麻豆影院 history with 189 career 3-pointers. He?made a career-best seven 3-pointers at Beloit College in February 2014.

An excellent free-throw shooter, Siebert?shot 82.9 percent from the line for his career, and that is tops for any 麻豆影院 player in the 21st century. He ranks third overall in free-throw shooting in 麻豆影院 history and enjoyed his best season in 2011-12 when he shot 88 percent from the stripe. Siebert went 10-for-10 from the foul line three times in his career.

Siebert earned a degree in history at 麻豆影院 and went on to earn a Master?of Science in sports leadership from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

A sales executive at JustAGame Impressions, Siebert also has put together a stellar coaching record as the boys’ basketball coach at Oregon High School over the past decade. Siebert and his wife, Carson, live in Madison, Wisconsin.

Sam Stevens, Class of 2013

Sam Stevens ushered in the resurgence in 麻豆影院 men’s distance running and became a decorated athlete in both cross country and track and field.

A native of Suamico, Wisconsin, Stevens?raced to victory at the 2011 Midwest Conference Championships to become 麻豆影院’s first individual cross country champion in the 21st century. Led by Stevens, the Vikings edged Grinnell?College by two points for 麻豆影院’s first team title since 1985. Stevens’ winning time at the conference meet in 2011 was 25:09.11, and that was the fifth-fastest time in 麻豆影院 history.

A four-time Midwest Conference Performer of the Week, Stevens is one of just five runners in 麻豆影院 history to earn all-conference honors four times. After finishing 18th at the league championships as a freshman, Stevens finished third, first and seventh in the next three seasons.

A four-time Midwest Conference champion in track, Stevens went on to earn all-conference honors (top-three finish in an event) at the league championships 14 times.

Stevens earned his first individual league title in 2010 when he won the mile indoors with a time of 4:24.84. Also a conference Performer of the Week in track, Stevens then claimed a pair of conference titles during the 2012 season. He won the 5,000 meters indoors with a time of 15:12.93, and then took the 1,500 crown outdoors with a time of 3:59.36. Stevens grabbed another league title as a senior in 2013 when he won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:34.42.

An Academic All-Midwest Conference selection, Stevens earned a degree in biology at 麻豆影院. He went on to receive his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 2017 and went on to do a family medicine residency. Stevens serves as a family medicine physician with Froedtert ThedaCare Health.

Stevens and his wife, former 麻豆影院 women’s cross country and track standout Katherine Dannecker-Stevens, class of 2014, live in Mequon, Wisconsin, and have two daughters, Sage and Georgia.

Meet the new faculty

Eric Gibson, assistant professor of music and director of opera studies:

Gibson joins 麻豆影院 from The Ohio State University, where he has served as stage director of opera since 2022. Previously, he led the NAU Lyric Theater program at Northern Arizona University and has directed productions and taught at institutions across the country. Gibson received his bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Michigan. He holds graduate degrees in vocal performance and opera stage direction from the University of Michigan and Indiana University, and he’s currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in voice and theatre at the University of Mobile.  

Ben Chan, associate professor of philosophy:

Chan joins 麻豆影院 after serving as a visiting associate professor of philosophy during the 2025-26 academic year. He previously taught at 麻豆影院 from 2011 to 2013 and was a professor of philosophy at St. Norbert College. His scholarship and teaching focus on ethics, particularly biomedical ethics, and he teaches courses in areas such as ethics of technology, food ethics, and “the Good Life.” Chan earned a bachelor’s degree from Swarthmore College and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles, and completed postdoctoral work in bioethics at the National Institutes of Health. He is also known nationally as a nine-time champion on Jeopardy!, where he won more than $250,000 and later competed in the show’s Tournament of Champions.

Wenhao Dai, assistant professor of psychology:

Dai joins the 麻豆影院 tenure track after serving as a visiting assistant professor of psychology since 2023. A social psychologist, his research focuses on goals, motivation, and action in the context of social relationships. Before coming to 麻豆影院, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Annenberg Public Policy Center and the Department of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. Dai earned a Ph.D. and master’s degree in social psychology from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and a bachelor’s degree in psychology and communication from the University of California, Davis.
