麻豆影院 University today marked the opening of its new West Campus building at a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating its new interdisciplinary hub. The building is designed to foster interdisciplinary creative learning, collaboration, and community engagement.

A Bold New Chapter聽

The $38 million development, located at the corner of East College Avenue and South Drew Street, features more than 100,000 square feet of academic and public space. The building features the Trout Museum of Art on the first floor, state-of-the-art academic spaces on the second floor, and beautiful one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments on the third and fourth floors that are available to the general public.聽

The project is a response to a growing need for new and innovative ways of preparing students for the changing world and the evolving careers ahead of them as they move into the workplace after graduation.

The interdisciplinary hub encompasses the Humanities, Math, Statistics, Computer Science, and the Conservatory of Music to cultivate cross-disciplinary collaboration and spark innovation.聽

The project was made possible through partnerships with the Trout Museum of Art, community leaders, and 麻豆影院 alumni. Fredrick Fisher and Partners of Los Angeles led the architectural design. Locally owned Boldt Construction served as the general contractor for the project, and the 40 upper-level, LUX apartments are now managed by聽NAI Pfefferle, a commercial real estate firm headquartered in Appleton.聽

Susan Hall, a 1976 麻豆影院 alumna and current member of the 麻豆影院 Board of Trustees, said 麻豆影院 held a special place in her heart because it was where she learned to think deeply, listen generously, and believe in the power of community.聽

鈥淲hen I first heard the vision for West Campus, I was struck by its boldness, A space that brings together the humanities, mathematics, computer science, and the conservatory. That鈥檚 not just interdisciplinary鈥攊t鈥檚 transformational.鈥澛

Hall and other key supporters included local business leader John Bergstrom, Curt Detjen, President and CEO of the Community Foundation, and the Van Asten family.聽

Senior Eli Elder was working to solve the equation of what school would allow him to study within a traditional college setting and a world-class conservatory. He found there was only one answer.聽聽

Elder, of Highland Park, Illinois, chose to study at 麻豆影院 University primarily because of the Bachelor of Musical Arts (B.M.A.) degree, first introduced as a degree option in 2019. The program offers students a 50-50 split between music studies and their choice of another field in the liberal arts landscape. 麻豆影院 now has four degree options:聽Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Arts & Bachelor of Music Dual Degree, and the B.M.A.

Elder鈥檚 field of choice was mathematics.聽

鈥(The B.M.A. program) allows me to study music and math in a really easy way that鈥檚 built into the fabric of the program,鈥 Elder said. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 have to jump through hoops to be able to study both.鈥澛

Although Elder had first intended to choose physics as his cognate, he said he was swayed by his math prerequisites. The professors and the classes were interesting to him, and he chose math as his concentration.聽聽

Even within the world of math, Elder has ample opportunity to embrace the liberal arts education at 麻豆影院.聽聽

鈥淚鈥檝e taken a lot of math classes, but I鈥檝e also been able to take stats classes, computer science, poetry, pretty much whatever I want to,鈥 Elder said.聽聽

Meanwhile, within the Conservatory, Elder鈥檚 focus is in jazz and contemporary improvisation with a concentration in jazz saxophone. The B.M.A. program allows students to audition for the Conservatory with a non-classical repertoire, creating an adaptable and modern path forward as a musician.聽聽

Elder has been able to work with musicians and artists from across all genres and disciplines.聽

鈥淭he community, everyone is just so nice to each other, and there鈥檚 so many opportunities to collaborate with all different types of musicians, all different types of instruments,鈥 Elder said, 鈥渁nd everyone鈥檚 just so willing and excited to.鈥澛

Elder also took his interests abroad with the Budapest Semesters in Mathematics Education. While in Budapest, he was able to learn about the Hungarian pedagogy of mathematics and how it’s applied in middle schools and high schools.聽聽

One of the most prominent things he learned, Elder said, was the spiral curriculum. Instead of taking one subject each year, like most schools in America, Hungarian schools will touch on each subject, then circle back every year with more rigorous lessons.聽聽

Elder also learned about their inquiry-based and discovery-based learning. Instead of teachers lecturing and students taking notes, the class solves problems together, and their results allow them to fully understand the theorems.聽聽

For Elder, the trip was an eye-opening experience.聽聽

鈥淭he support that 麻豆影院 gave me in applying, finding the program, getting funding was very, very helpful, and it was a life-changing experience for me,鈥 Elder said.聽聽

Following graduation, Elder plans to pursue his passion for mathematics and education by attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison to earn his master鈥檚 in curriculum and instruction for secondary mathematics.聽聽

He has also been equipped by his liberal arts education to bring the arts to the classroom鈥攅ven the math classroom.聽

鈥淚mplementing the arts is definitely a great way to further education,鈥 Elder said. 鈥淗ow can we relate these ideas? So, implementing (the arts) both on the student and educator side.鈥澛

Joseph Carpenter, a 麻豆影院 University mathematics and physics double major, is the recipient of a prestigious Goldwater Scholarship.

This is the third time in the last five years that a 麻豆影院 student has been among the national honorees in the Goldwater Scholarship Program, which honors the late Sen. Barry Goldwater and was designed to foster and encourage high-achieving students in the fields of math, natural sciences, and engineering.聽

Carpenter, a junior from Minneapolis, has worked with Doug Martin, associate professor of physics, in devising a research-grade optical microscope. The microscope is capable of research-grade multi-color fluorescence imaging and brightfield or darkfield imaging that users can take apart and re-assemble. The students involved not only learn how to use microscopes but how to re-design them for new experiments.

鈥淚 had the opportunity to conduct research at 麻豆影院 last summer through the LURF (麻豆影院 University Research Fellows) program,鈥 Carpenter said. 鈥淢y work with Professor Martin on developing an open-source microscope gave me the experience necessary to be competitive for the Goldwater.鈥

The Goldwater Scholarship Program, one of the oldest and most prestigious national scholarships, seeks to identify, encourage, and financially support college sophomores and juniors who show promise of becoming the next generation of research leaders in natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics.

鈥淭his scholarship is valuable to me in that it will support my undergraduate studies while providing me with the opportunity to connect with other Goldwater Scholars as I prepare for the next stage of my education,鈥 Carpenter said.

Claire Kervin, assistant professor of English and director of fellowships advising, worked with Carpenter to prepare his application.

鈥淭he Goldwater Scholarship recognizes Joseph’s impressive academic accomplishments and his outstanding potential to become a leader in scientific research,鈥 Kervin said.

In 2019, Willa Dworschack 鈥20, a physics major from Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin, was named a Goldwater Scholar. She was doing research in atomic and molecular optics.

In 2020, Travis Dillon 鈥21, a mathematics major, earned the Goldwater honor for his significant math research both on and off campus.

Three members of the 麻豆影院 University faculty have been granted 2024 tenure appointments.

President Laurie Carter and the college鈥檚 Board of Trustees, based on recommendations by the faculty Committee on Tenure, Promotion, Reappointment, and Equal Employment Opportunity, approved the granting of tenure to聽Ann Ellsworth (music), Julie Rana (mathematics), and Andrew Sage (statistics). All three will be promoted to associate professor at the start of the 2024-25 academic year.

鈥淚 am very happy indeed that these three colleagues have been awarded tenure,鈥 said Peter Blitstein, provost and dean of faculty. 鈥淭hese distinguished faculty members together represent the kind of teacher-scholars who make 麻豆影院 a leading national liberal arts college and conservatory.鈥

Ann Ellsworth

Ann Ellsworth

A horns professor in the Conservatory of Music since 2018, Ellsworth delivers excellence as a teacher, soloist, recording artist, and chamber musician. She attended the Eastman and Juilliard schools, with further study in Oslo and St. Petersburg, Russia.

Her versatile聽recordings have included solo projects鈥EUPHORIA,听Rain Coming,听Late Night Thoughts, and聽Leningrad鈥攁nd ensemble work such as 2022鈥檚 music project with the 麻豆影院 Graduate Bayreuth Tuben Quintet.

Ellsworth has toured internationally as a member of Kristjan Jarve鈥檚 Absolute Ensemble, the Manhattan Brass, the Danish Esbjerg Ensemble, and numerous other musical and artistic configurations. An advocate of new music, she was a founding member of the New Music and Culture Symposium.

Ellsworth pushes musical boundaries and brings that same curiosity and excitement to her teaching.

Julie Rana

Julie Rana

A member of the mathematics faculty since 2017, Rana has excelled in classroom teaching and research. Much of her scholarly focus has been in algebraic geometry, especially moduli spaces, singular algebraic surfaces, deformation theory, and computational methods.

In 2021, Rana was awarded a two-year grant of $192,905 through the National Science Foundation鈥檚 Launching Early-Career Academic Pathways in the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (LEAPS-MPS) program. The first-time grant was awarded to only 21 pre-tenure faculty across the country. A portion of the grant allowed Rana to work on research in algebraic geometry related to moduli spaces, collaborating with math scholars in Europe, Chile, and elsewhere in the United States. It also allowed her to hire multiple students for summer research work in an area of math known as graph theory.

Rana has played lead roles in developing math curriculum and support mechanisms aimed at making 麻豆影院鈥檚 mathematics, computer science, and data science programs more inclusive and accessible.

She earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a bachelor鈥檚 degree in mathematics from Marlboro College.

Andrew Sage

Andrew Sage

Sage joined the 麻豆影院 faculty in 2018. , he has brought innovative teaching and research to the Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science聽Department.

Sage has been a key part of that department鈥檚 growth, including the 2020 launch of a data science minor.

He has worked with colleagues to develop new courses in rapidly advancing areas such as data science, machine learning, and Bayesian statistics. He also has worked across disciplines to bolster data-driven courses and research in other departments.

Sage has a bachelor鈥檚 degree from the College of Wooster, master鈥檚 degrees from Iowa State and Miami University, and a Ph.D. from Iowa State.

麻豆影院 University sophomore David Smith thought he was on track to study cello in a conservatory. But his final year in high school in Radford, Virginia, rerouted him.

鈥淚 kind of fell in love with math and physics in my senior year,鈥 Smith said.

He then sought a college path that would allow him to study math and physics at a high level while remaining immersed in music. He found just that at 麻豆影院, where he is pursuing a double major in mathematics and physics while also being a fixture in the Conservatory of Music.

鈥淚鈥檝e played cello since I was 5,鈥 Smith said.

And he鈥檚 done it brilliantly鈥攕o much so that he was recently named the co-winner of the Conservatory鈥檚 annual Concerto Competition (along with junior Annika Schmidt). As a co-winner, he will now take to the Memorial Chapel stage to perform as a soloist with the 麻豆影院 Symphony Orchestra (LSO) on March 8.

After more than a dozen years playing cello, Smith said he found the perfect balance at 麻豆影院. Drawn to the theoretical, math-heavy side of physics, switching focus from music to math was the right choice, he said. But that yearning to stay connected to his music didn鈥檛 go away.

鈥淭hat is why I like 麻豆影院; I can participate in everything without having to be in the Conservatory,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淚鈥檓 taking lessons, I鈥檓 going to studio, I鈥檓 in a bunch of chamber groups鈥擨鈥檓 in the Con and I鈥檓 not.鈥

More about Concerto Competition co-winner Annika Schmidt: cello and linguistics

For the past year, Smith has focused his music on a single work: Ernest Bloch’s Cello Concerto. He will perform it in the March 8 LSO concert. It is fully titled Schelomo: Rhapsodie H茅bra茂que for Violoncello and Orchestra; the immense title is matched by music of similar complexity.

鈥淚t鈥檚 unlike any other cello concerto that鈥檚 been written,鈥 Smith said. “At least to me it is聽different than a lot of the standard repertoire that cellists play. … It鈥檚 kind of melismatic and, I wouldn鈥檛 say atonal, but uses a lot of dissonance and tension and release.鈥

Instead of a melody focus, the cellist works with the orchestra to evoke various moods. Despite Bloch鈥檚 original plan for a vocal soloist, Smith finds the work highly idiomatic for the cello.

鈥淚t was really written with cello in mind,鈥 he said. “It’s聽just satisfying to play; there are a lot of very expressive sections where you can take as much time as you want and play with every aspect of it. There is聽a lot of creative freedom you can have.鈥

Among the concerto鈥檚 standout features is its emphasis on despair and pain. Oftentimes these emotions are alternated rapidly, which takes careful musicality to pull off.

鈥淚鈥檝e never really played a piece that was written like this鈥攚ith more melismatic and chromatic themes in it鈥攕o I think the hardest part was memorizing it,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淚t was a nightmare to memorize.鈥

Among Bloch鈥檚 most famous works, the Swiss composer wrote it in 1915 and 1916, just before leaving for America. It was the culmination of his 鈥淛ewish Cycle,鈥 where he sought to understand his personal and religious identity by composing with his own conception of Jewish music.

It is a personal piece for Smith, too, having been well-known to him since childhood.

鈥淚 loved this piece as a kid,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 listened to it on an iPod鈥攐ne of those ancient Apple iPods鈥攖o go to sleep.鈥

The piece has been on his repertoire wish list for many years.

Smith has plans to study physics in graduate school but will not abandon the cello along the way, he said.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 see myself ever putting the cello down,鈥 he said.

Constance Kassor can鈥檛 help but smile as she talks about the state-of-the-art academic spaces being planned for the new building that鈥檚 about to rise in the 300 block of E. College Avenue.

The 麻豆影院 University associate professor of religious studies points to the Humanities Center that will be part of the building鈥檚 30,000-square-foot second floor as an opportunity to bring additional vigor to the humanities at 麻豆影院鈥攎ore collaboration, more innovative teaching tools, and more opportunities to partner with outside scholars.

鈥淲e do things in different ways, we do things more collaboratively, we do things digitally,鈥 Kassor said. 鈥淲e do a lot more than read books and write papers. This is really highlighting and supporting ways that the humanities are changing and growing and innovating.鈥

Kassor is among the 麻豆影院 faculty providing leadership as academic spaces are mapped out for the coming 315 E. College Avenue building and the nearby Fox Commons development, two transformational capital projects that will add layers to the student experience, bring new pathways to career discernment, and build long-sustaining partnerships within the Fox Cities community.

Scott Corry, the Patricia Hamar Boldt Professor of Liberal Studies and professor of mathematics, is at the table for planning spaces in the 315 building for the growing Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Department; Beth De Stasio, the Raymond H. Herzog Professor of Science and professor of biology, is working to develop collaborative spaces for pre-health students on the third floor of Fox Commons; and Adam Galambos, the Dwight and Marjorie Peterson Professor of Innovation and associate professor of economics, is leading a group of faculty members who are helping to design a Business and Entrepreneurship Center and Finance Lab on the second floor of Fox Commons to foster student-community collaborations. Brian Pertl, dean of the Conservatory, is leading design plans in the 315 building to enhance Conservatory offerings.

鈥淲e can design the classrooms to foster active learning and create the type of rich learning environments that we want on campus,鈥 said Corry, whose department of 10 faculty members will be moving their offices and classrooms onto the second floor of the 315 building. 鈥淎nother exciting thing is creating the common space to build community among math-stats-computer science students, and really all the students who take those classes. I鈥檓 excited that we鈥檙e building that in at the outset as part of the design.鈥

Two major developments build momentum

Fox Commons and the 315 building, both announced in summer 2023, will strengthen academic programs while enhancing career discernment for students across campus. In addition, they provide avenues for 麻豆影院 to grow its enrollment in coming years, a key piece of the college鈥檚 strategic planning.

The Fox Commons development, to house nearly 180 麻豆影院 students in modern living-learning communities in the heart of downtown Appleton, is expected to open in two phases鈥攖he second floor by fall of 2024 and the third floor a year later. And the new four-story mixed-use building at 315 E. College Avenue, in partnership with Trout Museum of Art, is expected to open in fall of 2025, transforming the west edge of campus. Both capital projects will bring career-focused collaborations woven through multiple disciplines.

Excitement for what this will bring to 麻豆影院 students鈥攊n conjunction with other strategic investments鈥攊s building on and off campus.

鈥淭he student experience includes what happens inside the classroom as well as outside the classroom,鈥 President Laurie A. Carter said. 鈥淭hese projects speak to the future. Our faculty and students will have state-of-the-art teaching and learning spaces, our students will have modern living environments, they鈥檒l have partners who can connect them with careers. And all of this will be done within the context of a deepening relationship with the community.鈥

The mix of built-in learning, collaborating, and mentoring spaces and new housing options is a powerful combination that adds important layers to the student experience as 麻豆影院 strengthens its draw in an increasingly competitive higher education environment. As the enrollment cliff arrives鈥攁 reference to the dramatic drop in the number of high school graduates nationwide set to peak between 2025 and 2029鈥攊t is paramount that 麻豆影院 positions itself to attract the best and brightest students while continuing to lean into the lifelong benefits of a liberal arts education, Carter said. That means embracing the university鈥檚 177-year history and its commitment to the liberal arts while evolving the student experience to meet the needs of today鈥檚 students鈥攏eeds that are different than those of past generations.

The draw of these projects comes not in the buildings themselves but in what those new spaces bring to 麻豆影院鈥檚 students and faculty鈥攕tronger academic programming in areas ranging from the arts and humanities to pre-health and business and entrepreneurship, modern teaching tools, and built-in mentorship opportunities aimed at building life-after-麻豆影院 career paths.

The new building at 315 E. College Ave., at the southwest corner of College Avenue and Drew Street (adjacent to Brokaw Hall), will be 麻豆影院鈥檚 first new major building project since construction of Warch Campus Center in 2009. It will feature more than 100,000 square feet across four floors.

The nonprofit art museum will be on the first floor, with state-of-the-art academic spaces for 麻豆影院 on the second floor. The upper floors will feature market-rate apartments, space that could one day be converted to student housing to meet future needs. It will be built by Boldt and jointly owned by 麻豆影院 and the Trout Museum of Art, with 麻豆影院 controlling the upper three floors and the art museum the ground floor.

A recently announced $10 million gift from an alum and spouse is a huge initial step.

麻豆影院鈥檚 academic space on the second floor will include soundproof offices for Conservatory faculty and offices for the Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Department. It will include an innovative teaching and co-curricular commons, where students will engage in both formal and experiential learning in varying disciplines. And it will be home to the Humanities Center, an intellectual collaborative for faculty, students, and scholars-in-residence.聽

The mathematics, statistics, and computer science faculty have outgrown their space in Briggs Hall as the department has expanded to accommodate growing student interest, including in the statistics and data science minor that was introduced in 2020. The opportunity for the department鈥檚 faculty to have offices together and share innovative teaching spaces is a game-changer, Corry said. A bonus is the alignment with the Conservatory.

鈥淭here has always been a lot of overlap between mathematics and computer science students and students interested in music,鈥 Corry said. 鈥淭hat happens here in general at 麻豆影院, but in this case it鈥檚 a really good kind of synergy for us.鈥

Kassor, meanwhile, said humanities faculty will have new opportunities to innovate. Humanities faculty have outgrown Main Hall, many with offices located in other buildings across campus.

While the humanities faculty offices will remain where they are鈥攊ncluding in Main Hall鈥攖he new space in the 315 building will allow faculty to work more in unison. That will include digital projects鈥攑odcasting, video editing, virtual reality, and more鈥攁nd collaborations across disciplines in deeper ways than is now available.

鈥淭he idea is it will allow for more interdisciplinary work between faculty, between departments, and between faculty and students,鈥 Kassor said.

There also will be several designated offices for visiting scholars, providing new opportunities to bring scholars-in-residence into the curriculum, add new punch to traditional programs such as the Main Hall Forum, and facilitate connections to the community so humanities faculty and students can spotlight the work they鈥檙e doing.

鈥淏ecause this space on the corner of College and Drew is going to be so accessible and right there downtown, it will be a place we can invite community members to,鈥 Kassor said. 鈥淲e can really work to highlight the real-world skills our students gain in humanities classes. And this is where we鈥檙e going to lean into creating internship opportunities and set up community partnerships.鈥

Meanwhile, in the halls of the Conservatory, there is growing excitement over the possibilities that will come with the new space鈥攁 huge upgrade from office and studio space formerly housed in the Con West building.

鈥淭his will be an enormous addition to our commitment to giving our students the tools they need for a successful musical life in the rapidly changing world of today, tomorrow, and far into the future,鈥 Pertl said. 聽

Expanding campus with Fox Commons

The Business and Entrepreneurship Center in Fox Commons will feature meeting spaces and a stage for pitch contests, speakers, and other activities.

Fox Commons, located three blocks to the west, will give 麻豆影院 new academic and student life avenues as a living-learning community that blends apartment-style student housing with built-in mentoring partnerships.

The renovation of City Center Plaza into Fox Commons began in the summer of 2023. Located at 10 E. College Avenue, Fox Commons will be a 180,000-square-foot health care, housing, retail, and mixed-use community hub. It鈥檚 a project of Dark Horse Development and Boldt. Besides 麻豆影院, other prominent tenants include Mosaic Family Health, Prevea Health, and gener8tor, a business incubator focused on sustainability.

Built-in academic and collaboration spaces include a Business and Entrepreneurship Center, a Finance Lab equipped with specialized financial industry software, a pre-health commons, a community kitchen, and lecture and meeting rooms. The living-learning spaces will allow for 麻豆影院 students interested in business and entrepreneurship and pre-health careers to collaborate regularly with professionals from Mosaic, Prevea, gener8tor, and other nearby finance and business entities.

The business and entrepreneurship piece will come first, with those spaces and the second-floor apartments opening in time for the start of the 2024-25 academic year. The pre-health spaces and third-floor apartments will open the following year.

The Pre-Health Commons in Fox Commons will feature a built-in kitchen amid the teaching spaces.聽

De Stasio has been working with designers to incorporate collaborative spaces into the third floor that will facilitate partnerships with the health-focused tenants. She envisions at least two speaker series tied to 鈥淭he Future of Medicine鈥 and to career pathways within the broader field of health care as well as more casual mingling of students and health care professionals. There will be a lending library for health-related materials, and there will be robust mentorship activities ranging from internships and shadowing experiences to mock interviews.

鈥淚n addition, the inclusion of a demonstration kitchen will allow us to provide chef-led demonstrations of healthy cooking for these students living with full kitchens in their apartments for the first time, as well as for other students on campus,鈥 De Stasio said.

There also will be room to invite alumni who are Fox Valley-based health care practitioners to come in for catered meals with 麻豆影院 students.

鈥淲e want to provide space for those interactions with health professionals,鈥 De Stasio said.

On the floor below will be spaces catering to business and entrepreneurship; spaces that Galambos sees as a momentum-builder following this year鈥檚 launch of the business and entrepreneurship major and the recent growth of the innovation and entrepreneurship program.

鈥淲e will work together with gener8tor, another key tenant in the Fox Commons development, to cultivate and enhance the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the Fox Cities,鈥 Galambos said. 鈥溌槎褂霸衡檚 innovation and entrepreneurship program has engaged with the business and entrepreneurship community for a number of years, but our new business and entrepreneurship major and the new center in Fox Commons will open the door to a lot more opportunities, and we are excited to build those new collaborations.鈥

The Business and Entrepreneurship Center will become a hub for everything from workshops and guest speakers to community events and pitch contests. And the Finance Lab will bring experiential learning opportunities for students interested in business.

鈥淎ll students will have access to the programming,鈥 Galambos said, 鈥渂ut those who will live at Fox Commons will benefit from being part of a residential community organized around their academic and career interests.鈥

New housing options

While the focus in the Fox Commons development has been mostly on business and entrepreneurship, pre-health, and related disciplines, the apartments will also be a draw for a wide range of upper-year students. 麻豆影院 juniors and seniors will have the opportunity to live in two-, three-, and four-bedroom apartments on the second and third floors.聽A lottery system is being developed for students wanting to live in Fox Commons.

麻豆影院 senior Anders Hanhan, an environmental studies and government double major from St. Paul, Minnesota, who serves as president of the 麻豆影院 University Community Council (LUCC), said the apartment-style living option is something students have been asking for.

鈥淥ne thousand percent,鈥 he said of students wanting that option in their junior and senior years. 鈥淭here are a lot of students who are seeking more independence, and this absolutely does that in a way that 麻豆影院 hasn鈥檛 done before.鈥

Addison Littlefield, a senior from Sidney, Maine, called the Fox Commons option a huge win because it gives upper-year students who want to explore life outside of residence halls an opportunity to do so while remaining closely connected with campus.

鈥淲e always hear about the 麻豆影院 bubble,鈥 she said. 鈥淭his is not exactly popping the bubble but rather expanding it.鈥

The design of Fox Commons is intentional in that students will still be part of the campus environment while also having the opportunity to explore what life after 麻豆影院 might look like鈥攑ersonally and professionally.

鈥淲e鈥檙e not really viewing this as off-campus housing but rather an extension of our campus in a way that allows students to develop those transitional skills while still being very connected to the campus community,鈥 Carter said.

Bolstering the student experience

麻豆影院 leadership has been actively building on the student experience. That includes new and enhanced academic programs, a stronger and more engaged Career Center, additional support staff in Student Life, new investments in athletics鈥攏early a quarter of 麻豆影院鈥檚 students are student-athletes鈥攁nd now new opportunities in academics, residential life, and community partnerships.

In addition to the partnerships with Trout Museum of Art and Fox Commons, the university has in the past year:

  • Strengthened the first-year experience, beginning with a reimagined Welcome Week and the hiring of a first-year dean.
  • Introduced a new business and entrepreneurship major, built through the lens of the liberal arts.
  • Introduced the 麻豆影院 Advantage to improve accessibility to a 麻豆影院 education for all academically qualified students from Wisconsin and Illinois.
  • Introduced a new dance minor.
  • Upgraded facilities with more than 50 separate projects, many focused on residence halls.
  • Began a new facilities master planning process to assess facilities across campus.
  • Built a new outdoor track and field complex at Whiting Field and a new locker room facility at Banta Bowl.
  • Announced plans to fund-raise for the building of a new recreation center. The recreation center, open to all students, would include fitness spaces and indoor competition and/or training facilities for track, baseball, softball, tennis, and more. More details are expected to be released soon.

The strategic initiatives, supported by the Board of Trustees, puts a focus on enhancing the student experience in academics, student life, and career exploration. And they position 麻豆影院 to be able to transition, when the time is right, from an enrollment of about 1,500 to something closer to 1,900 while remaining a residential liberal arts campus.

Growing a stronger community

The enthusiasm surrounding these investments is palpable, in part because of the prospect of building a tighter, more connected community in downtown Appleton. That鈥檚 not lost on students.

鈥淚t helps open up 麻豆影院 to the Appleton community,鈥 Littlefield, a music performance major, said of both the Fox Commons and 315 E. College developments. 鈥淚 think the living-learning communities provide a great chance for students to interact with businesses downtown, kind of further fostering the 麻豆影院 connections to Appleton.鈥

Those growing interactions speak to what Appleton has to offer in terms of culture, education, and career opportunities.

鈥淔or our students, it鈥檚 additional chances to get involved, to find their passion, find opportunities, get ready for life after 麻豆影院,鈥 said Chris Clarke, vice president for Student Life. 鈥淚 think Appleton will benefit from us being more in the community, and I think our students will benefit from these opportunities with our partners.鈥

Carter calls it an important next step in the campus-community relationship, one that dates to the founding of 麻豆影院 in 1847 and the development of Appleton as a municipality in the years to follow.

鈥淭his is an opportunity to deepen that relationship in a very meaningful way,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about having our students be part of the community in a way that allows them to understand what it means to be good neighbors, to really interact with the College Avenue population a little more deeply, particularly as the downtown becomes more residential. We鈥檙e preparing them for life after 麻豆影院 while still providing them with that piece of the 麻豆影院 bubble they鈥檙e looking for.”

Where: The mixed-use rebuild of City Center Plaza by Dark Horse Development is at 10 E. College Avenue in the heart of downtown Appleton, three blocks west of the 麻豆影院 campus.

Academic spaces: There will be learning and teaching spaces focused on business and entrepreneurship (second floor) and pre-health (third floor) careers鈥攁 Business and Entrepreneurship Center, a Finance Lab, a Pre-Health Commons, and lecture and meeting rooms.

Housing: 麻豆影院 will be a tenant in the building, with housing available for about 180 students in two-, three-, and four-bedroom apartments on the second and third floors.

Collaborations: The space is designed to allow mentorship and collaboration with other tenants, including Mosaic Family Health, Prevea Health, and gener8tor, all geared toward career discernment and preparation.

Timeline: The second-floor apartments and learning spaces are expected to open in fall of 2024. The third floor would open in fall of 2025. 聽

Where: The new building will go up at the southwest corner of College Avenue and Drew Street. Boldt is the builder.

Scope: It will feature more than 100,000 square feet over four floors. The first floor will house the nonprofit Trout Museum of Art. The second floor will house state-of-the-art academic spaces for the humanities, the Conservatory, and mathematics, computer science, and statistics/data science, including a Humanities Center and experiential learning spaces. The upper two floors will feature market-rate apartments, with the option of converting some of that space to student housing in the future.

Ownership: The first floor will be owned by Trout Museum of Art. The upper three floors will be owned and controlled by 麻豆影院.

Timeline: Construction will begin in early 2024. The building is expected to open by fall of 2025.

Three recent 麻豆影院 University graduates pursuing doctorate degrees鈥攊n social psychology, mathematics, and electrical engineering鈥攁re recipients of grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Anmol Gupta 鈥18, Ada Stelzer 鈥21, and Sarabeth Brandt 鈥21 have been selected for the prestigious fellowships in the NSF鈥檚 Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP), which provides high-achieving Ph.D. students with three years of significant funding to support their research.

We caught up with them to learn about their respective research and their journeys after 麻豆影院.

Anmol Gupta 鈥18

Anmol Gupta ’18

Gupta received his fellowship in social psychology. Working toward his Ph.D. at Stanford University, Gupta is looking to apply social psychological insights to social problems through theory-driven research related to issues of discrimination, bias, and prejudice.

Gupta鈥檚 work after graduating from 麻豆影院 has focused on developing and evaluating evidence-based intervention programs for young people, particularly in 6th through 12th grade. These programs use community engagement opportunities and curriculum to encourage marginalized and/or disadvantaged children to find their voice and use it within their communities. Gupta is continuing this work as he develops the theory behind it.聽

Gupta focused on honing his research skills in the years between 麻豆影院 and Stanford. After 麻豆影院, he began work at the Center for Social Development and Education at UMass-Boston as a research assistant. He then worked as a research coordinator for the Lifting the Bar Project at Stanford with Dr. Greg Walton鈥檚 lab. For Gupta, these work experiences not only developed his knowledge of interdisciplinary research methods but were instrumental in broadening his ideas about the application of social psychology theories to solving pressing social problems.

Gupta traces the building of this foundation to his time at 麻豆影院. The two-class Research Methods series with psychology professors Peter Glick and Matt Ansfield gave him the tools to put his questions about the world into research. Gupta developed strong relationships with his professors: Glick would later mentor him through his honors thesis and act as a reference for his NSF application. 聽

鈥淚 feel like that鈥檚 really unique about 麻豆影院 鈥 not just working in a lab but building a solid relationship with a professor and working closely with them to answer questions that are important to you,鈥 he said.聽

For Gupta, who grew up in a predominantly white Wisconsin community, social psychology is the framework he uses to ask questions about his experiences in society and the toolbox he uses to find the answers. He said he鈥檚 passionate about sharing these tools with others for the betterment of themselves, each other, and their communities.聽

Ada Stelzer 鈥21

Ada Stelzer ’21

Stelzer received her fellowship in mathematics. As she works toward her Ph.D. at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, she鈥檚 working to answer questions about complex polynomial equations. She is studying Schubert calculus, which aims to find points of intersection between surfaces in large numbers of dimensions. Because these surfaces are so abstract, she’s using something called Groebner geometry to relate them to simpler coordinate planes. The process is similar to polynomial long division.

Stelzer鈥檚 work as an undergrad at 麻豆影院, particularly her independent study in Groebner geometry, led her to Schubert calculus in graduate school.

鈥淭here was a lot of room to do what you wanted,鈥 Stelzer said of her time at 麻豆影院. 鈥淢y senior year, my friend Travis (Dillon 鈥21) and I organized a math colloquium series where we and others took turns giving talks on our favorite subjects. At a big school, we wouldn鈥檛 have been able to do that.鈥

Studying in the liberal arts allowed Stelzer to pursue linguistic anthropology, creative writing, and choir alongside mathematics. She said that variety of study has had a positive influence on her teaching style.

Stelzer is excited to make an impact in the mathematics field. For her, working on a problem is a connection of more than numbers.

鈥淲hen you use someone else鈥檚 result, it鈥檚 kind of like you鈥檙e holding hands across time,鈥 she said. 鈥淲hen you understand, it鈥檚 like you talk to each other, even though they were living 200 years ago.鈥

Sarabeth Brandt ’21

Sarabeth Brandt ’21

Brandt received her grant in electrical engineering. Currently a Ph.D. student at Pennsylvania State University, Brandt is working to develop a tool to monitor and study ground-nesting bees.

She is studying ground-piercing radar to develop this tool. Typically, these radar systems are used for larger surveys, such as finding pipes underground.

鈥淢y goal is to take that idea and push it a bit further by looking for these small nest cells,鈥 Brandt said. 鈥淭he idea is to use the electromagnetic properties of the nest cells 鈥 to identify them against their environment.鈥

Brandt is trying to pinpoint squash bee nests. Squash bees, which have evolved along Pennsylvania squash plants, are especially effective pollinators of squash. Unlike honeybees, they nest individually and are inactive for most of the year, making it difficult to research them or track their population. Brandt said a tool like the one she鈥檚 developing would allow researchers to assess the bees鈥 state of population decline and make it easier to answer questions about the bees鈥 impact on squash plants.

Brandt found her passion for this project through a research program at Penn State called Drawdown while an undergrad at 麻豆影院. The program, taking place remotely in the summer of 2020, was focused on research toward climate solutions. Brandt worked with electrical engineers and etymologists to predict insects鈥 reactions to electromagnetic waves.

A physics major at 麻豆影院, Brandt found the liberal arts education made it easier to think outside of her field, which was invaluable at Drawdown. She credits 麻豆影院 with developing her skills in writing concisely, noting the positive comments about her writing on her application.

鈥淪eeking out unique opportunities can send you down really fun and interesting paths,鈥 Brandt said.

Whether through writing, speaking, or simply listening, communicating with others helps us learn more about each other and ourselves. That proved true for Sela Dombrower, a 麻豆影院 University junior from Boulder, Colorado, who used her growing Arabic skills to get the most out of her study abroad experience.

Dombrower studied in Amman, Jordan, from August through December. A math and linguistics major, she found it to be a new and exhilarating opportunity to learn colloquial Arabic and gain confidence in communicating.

While in Jordan, Dombrower wrote several blog posts about Jordanian culture and Arabic linguistics. Her blogs were a part of Amideast Abroad鈥檚 scholarship, and Dombrower seized the opportunity to not only fund her trip but share it. Writing for the blog helped her synthesize her adventures, feelings, and challenges in a way that made the trip even more memorable.

鈥淚t was an amazing opportunity to process my abroad experience and share it with people who didn鈥檛 know what to expect or were curious about what it was like,鈥 Dombrower said.

Dombrower, who had never traveled outside the United States before, said she went in with goals rather than expectations. She took the adventure day-by-day, which she said helped ease initial culture shock. She was able to appreciate Amman for what it is rather than what she鈥檇 been told it was.

鈥淚t鈥檚 beautiful,鈥 said Dombrower. 鈥淭here are little pockets with Byzantine gardens, old Roman architecture, and white or stone houses. There鈥檚 a lot of great street art as well.鈥

One of Dombrower鈥檚 goals was to learn the colloquial dialect of Arabic to communicate effectively in Jordan. Arabic regional dialects differ greatly, but she learned Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), which was her foundation for learning Levantine Arabic, commonly spoken in Jordan. Although learning was sometimes frustrating, Dombrower relished the opportunity to learn the language from the people who contribute to its evolution every day.

鈥淲hen you鈥檙e there, you鈥檙e constantly pushing yourself, constantly extending yourself in new situations, extending yourself to communicate,鈥 Dombrower said. 鈥淚 learned to trust the progress I had made. 鈥 can communicate using this language more than I thought I could.鈥

Though speaking is a large part of learning to communicate, Dombrower was careful not to neglect listening, and recognized herself as a visitor within an unfamiliar culture. Dombrower put Western preconceptions of Jordan and the Middle East aside and focused on learning from her host family and other Jordanians, and found her goals slid into place.

鈥淭he whole experience of learning a language while immersed in its culture and talking to people who are contributing to the evolution of that language is amazing,鈥 she said.

Her favorite thing about being abroad? The food. Jordan has many unique foods, but lots of Jordanian food is integrated with foods from other cultures, too. She and her host family ate a lot of kabsa, an Arab chicken and rice dish. Downtown, Dombrower would often get falafel with her friends, though it鈥檚 usually a breakfast food in Amman. Another favorite while out and about was manakeesh, a flatbread dish.

While Dombrower learned a lot while in Jordan, being abroad also gave her a taste of the knowledge she has yet to master.

鈥淭here鈥檚 still so much to see and learn, and there鈥檚 so many languages in the world,鈥 Dombrower said.

About this series: Lighting the Way With 鈥 is a periodic series in which we shine a light on 麻豆影院 alumni. Today we catch up with Kir-Sey Fam 鈥19, a software engineer with Disney+.

Kir-Sey Fam 鈥19 has been a 麻豆影院 University alumnus for all of eight months. But he already has stories to tell.

It鈥檚 not often that you step from the stage at Commencement and immediately land in the midst of one of the most talked about media developments in the world.

Welcome to Fam鈥檚 life since graduating in June 鈥 a bachelor of arts degree with majors in mathematics, computer science, and Russian studies. Before leaving 麻豆影院, he was hired as a software engineer with Disney+ in New York, meaning he was jumping into the fire as Disney prepared to roll out its much-anticipated streaming service on Nov. 12.

It reportedly had 10 million sign-ups the first day, a number that has grown to nearly 29 million in the three months since. Along the way, it鈥檚 introduced the world to Baby Yoda, put the聽Marvel,听Star Wars, and聽Pixar聽libraries at subscribers鈥 fingertips, and reshaped the high-stakes battleground for streaming services in ways we haven鈥檛 yet wrapped our eyes around.

As a kicker, a Disney+ original show is in the works that will be set in, yes, Appleton, Wisconsin. Kristin Chenoweth will take the lead in 鈥淭he Biggest Star in Appleton,鈥 playing a mom and waitress who gets her kicks as the star of local community theater.

Fam took some time to share what life has been like in the midst of all that wonderful chaos.

On his role at Disney+:

I鈥檓 currently working as a software engineer on the Growth Engineering team. What that means on a high level is that we examine each stage of the user experience, from when someone first lands on the Disney+ page, through to when they鈥檙e watching a show or interacting with other parts of Disney+. We then work to figure out what points of friction the user faces and experiment with changes to improve the user experience and increase retention.

The methods for accomplishing these goals are varied; the project I鈥檓 working on now involves using machine learning to improve how we handle billing for each user.聽 Going in, I didn鈥檛 really know what to expect as I hadn鈥檛 done any prior internships in larger companies before working at Disney. I would say that though they鈥檙e put together differently, taking classes at 麻豆影院 engaged me with a lot of the elements that I now use in my work.聽

On being part of the Disney+ launch:

As you may know, we experienced some launch-day issues related in part to the huge demand for Disney+. So, there was a bit of firefighting going on in different areas during launch. Thankfully, the services my team developed didn鈥檛 face any issues despite the huge throughput. That was a bit of a relief since my team had been on a tight deadline leading up to the launch for developing a service integral to the super bundle combining Disney+, ESPN+, and HULU subscriptions, which saw a lot of usage.聽 Following the launch, you could hear people talking about Disney+ on the subway, waiting in line at stores, just everywhere. And that really gave me a sense of accomplishment and excitement to hear so many people feeling enthusiastic about something that I had worked on.

On seeing a Disney+ show being developed that鈥檚 based in Appleton (no, he鈥檚 not a consultant 鈥 yet):

Yes, I鈥檓 excited to see what they do with the show. Unfortunately, as I鈥檓 on the engineering side of things, I don鈥檛 have much to do with direct content creation.

On how his 麻豆影院 experience, including the growth in computer science and data science during his time here, prepared him for the Disney+ job:

I would say that the classes I found most helpful were the algorithms courses I took with Professor (Joseph) Gregg, and particularly relevant now in my current project, the machine learning courses I took with Professor (Andrew) Sage.

Technology changes rapidly, and I think that the fundamentals I learned in the math/computer science department have helped ensure that I can quickly pick up any languages and frameworks that I need to use in projects.聽 Aside from that, although music and Russian literature are seemingly disparate subjects from computer science, I see a deep interconnectedness in my experience and knowledge from these fields that helps bring fresh perspectives to whatever I鈥檓 working on.

Travis Dillon 鈥21 is the recipient of one of the nation鈥檚 most esteemed awards for undergraduate students doing mathematics research.

Dillon, who majored in mathematics while diving deep into a wide range of research before graduating from 麻豆影院 in June, will receive the 2022 AMS-MAA-SIAM Frank and Brennie Morgan Prize for Outstanding Research in Mathematics by an Undergraduate Student.

The Morgan Prize, presented jointly by the American Mathematical Society (AMS), the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), will be awarded January 5 in Seattle.

Now a graduate student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Dillon called the 鈥渋ncredible honor鈥 a testament to the great mentors he had as an undergrad, including 麻豆影院 math professor Elizabeth Sattler, with whom he collaborated frequently over the past four years.

鈥淟iz Sattler has been, in more ways than I can count, an extraordinary mentor, advisor, and collaborator,鈥 he said.

In making its announcement of the award, the AMS said Dillon earned the Morgan Prize for his 鈥渟ignificant work in number theory, combinatorics, discrete geometry, and symbolic dynamics.鈥

鈥淲hen I was told that I won, I was stunned,鈥 Dillon said. 鈥淓very winner in the last 15 years had attended high-profile universities鈥攅ither Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Stanford or Yale.鈥

Sattler said she first recognized Dillon鈥檚 vast potential as a math student when he dove into an independent research project with her as a sophomore.

鈥淚 was shocked at his ability to solve challenging, high-level problems in such a short amount of time,鈥 she said.聽鈥淚 had anticipated this project would last an entire summer for a full-time student, but Travis solved that problem and pushed it further in just 10 weeks while still taking classes in Spring Term.聽Every time I threw something new at him or pointed him in a different direction, he ran away with it.聽It was just amazing.鈥

For his Senior Experience project last year, Dillon wrote a book, Graphs, Groups, Infinity: Three stories in mathematics, that looked to explain math concepts in a way that people with minimal math experience could understand and appreciate. He did it, Sattler said, with a mix of authority, expertise, and humor.

鈥淗e finished with over 200 pages of creative and imaginative text complete with pictures, stories, and exercises,鈥 she said.聽鈥淚t鈥檚 more fun than your standard textbook with things like Travis Dillon鈥檚 Rule of the Infinite鈥斺業f you think it鈥檚 true, it probably isn鈥檛鈥欌攁nd abstract multiplication tables filled in with rubber ducks with hats or scarves.聽This was a great way for him to finish his time here at 麻豆影院 and allowed him to put all those wonderful quirks of a liberal arts student into a document that will be around for a long time.鈥

The book currently lives in a digital format, with a few printed copies at 麻豆影院 courtesy of a print-on-demand service. Now Dillon is exploring options on how 鈥渢o best get it out into the world.鈥

The book project, he said, was a great opportunity to meld his love of math with a growing interest in writing.

鈥淭here鈥檚 a certain Zen to selecting and arranging words that communicate an idea exactly; to crafting sentences, paragraphs, sections, and chapters in my own particular style; to being sly, quirky, serious, profound, and irreverent precisely as I choose,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 frustrating, too, at times, but so is math. To a certain extent, difficulty is part of the appeal.鈥

While at 麻豆影院, Dillon completed seven papers, six of them published or accepted, four single-authored. In addition to independent studies with 麻豆影院 faculty, he attended summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) at Texas A&M University and Baruch College, and he spent a year in the Budapest Semesters in Mathematics program.

Scott Corry, professor of mathematics and chair of the Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Department, called the Morgan Prize 鈥渁 stunning and well-deserved achievement鈥 for Dillon.

鈥淥ur goal at 麻豆影院 is to help every student reach their full potential, and Travis鈥 potential is off the charts,鈥 Corry said. 鈥淲e are proud to have supported his development, through courses, mentoring, and research at LU as well as in off-campus programs, and we are eager to see his future contributions to mathematics and the broader world.鈥

This isn鈥檛 the first time Dillon has been honored for his math research while at 麻豆影院. Earlier this year, he received a prestigious National Science Foundation (NSF) award that will assist his work at MIT. A year prior, he was named a Goldwater Scholar, also a highly competitive honor.

Besides Sattler, Dillon said he鈥檚 had incredible mentors every step of the way. He was first inspired to pursue math while growing up near Newport, Washington. Two summers spent at a Canada/USA Mathcamp set him on his way.

This fall, Dillon began his graduate work at MIT as an MIT Presidential Fellow. Since 1999, MIT has used its Presidential Fellowships to 鈥渞ecruit the most outstanding students worldwide to pursue graduate studies at the Institute.鈥 It currently supports 110 to 125 new graduate students as Presidential Fellows each year.

The Morgan Prize, awarded annually to an undergraduate student for outstanding research in mathematics, was established in 1995 and is entirely endowed by a gift from Mrs. Frank (Brennie) Morgan.聽.

The award is one more step on the journey, Dillon said. Whether it鈥檚 more research or elevating the writing he started with his book project, the possibilities going forward are plentiful.

鈥淚 really enjoy working on research, but explaining and getting people fired up about math, leading them to their own聽aha!聽moments鈥攖hat鈥檚 a different kind of joy,鈥 he said. 鈥淔ortunately, these things often go hand in hand, and I鈥檓 looking forward to a long career in both.鈥
