尝补飞谤别苍肠别鈥檚 has now brought home DownBeat Awards 34 times over the past four-plus decades.聽This is the second time in three years the program has won two awards in the same year. Encarnaci贸n credits the students’ commitment to a wide range of music.

鈥淭he students we get here are smart, they鈥檙e curious, they like to explore,鈥� he said. 鈥淪o, we bring them different kinds of music, and they鈥檙e in, they鈥檙e engaged. For me, it鈥檚 seeing how they grow, how they engage with the art. That鈥檚 the reward.鈥�

The work of faculty across the Conservatory, Encarnaci贸n added, is a collective effort that shows up in the stellar performances of music students both individually and in ensembles.聽

鈥淭he DownBeat Awards speak to the talent, teamwork, and collegiality that makes the Conservatory thrive,鈥� he said. 鈥淚t is an honor and an inspiration to work with everyone involved in this process. Winning two awards in the same year again demonstrates enormous program depth.鈥�

For Encarnaci贸n鈥檚 contest entry in the Latin Group category, he submitted three charts from a performance during the 2024 Fred Sturm Jazz Celebration. Students were studying a different musical genre that included Afro-Cuban and Venezuelan rhythms.聽

鈥淭hese are very challenging to play, especially for the rhythm section,鈥� he said.聽

For Darling鈥檚 Jazz Ensemble entry, she submitted three contemporary charts that聽are challenging to play聽and require excellent musicianship from every member of the ensemble. In addition, they call for significant improvisation.

鈥淚t is fun to work on compositions like this because improvisation is woven throughout the fabric of the music,聽and it is rewarding for everyone to hear how it聽all comes together,鈥� she said.

The awards speak to the high level of consistency that has been built into a jazz program with an impressive track record dating back to the 1970s. Now led by Encarnaci贸n, it is among the best undergraduate jazz programs in the country.

From its inception, Jazz Celebration Weekend has had a unique flair. Founded by renowned jazz educator Fred Sturm in 1981, the festival was designed to be non-competitive and provide an inspirational boost at the start of the school year. A non-competitive festival of this sort was practically unheard of at the time. Now organized in tandem by Jos茅 L. Encarnaci贸n, associate professor of music and director of jazz studies; Patricia A. Darling, instructor of music; Jillian Johnson, director of conservatory programming; and Rosie Cannizzo, director of conservatory operations, this sentiment still rings true today.

鈥淭he goal,鈥� said Darling, 鈥渋s to have students learn about jazz style and improvisation and get excited about jazz music鈥攖hat’s the premise we’ve kept, and it鈥檚 something we鈥檒l never change. We have a lot of students who love Jazz Weekend because they don鈥檛 feel like they鈥檙e under a lot of pressure to perform.鈥�

Sturm鈥檚 innovative design rejects trophies and ratings, instead prioritizing group learning and genuine musicianship. This non-competitive model has inspired similar efforts nationwide.

The timing is also intentional: many middle and high school ensembles start their jazz programs later in the fall, so this earlier introduction gives students a strong head start.

鈥淭his environment provides an inspiration to students,鈥� Encarnaci贸n said. 鈥淭hey can work in ensemble workshops to strengthen group interaction skills and jazz improvisational concepts with renowned clinicians.鈥�

These clinicians, including 麻豆影院 faculty and guest percussionist David Hagedorn, tailor custom-suited workshops for each ensemble鈥檚 needs.

鈥淭he clinicians that come in are there to help the directors with what they want,鈥� Darling said. 鈥淚f they want to work on improvisation, we鈥檒l focus on that, if they want to work up the charts, we鈥檒l give attention there.鈥�

Jazz requires stylistic approaches that go beyond sheet music, explained Darling. Matters of articulation, improvisation, and groove are deeply rooted into the tradition, yet require listening and mentoring to understand.

To this end, visiting students also attend afternoon masterclasses, where jazz faculty continue to demonstrate these concepts on their individual instruments. It was a natural addition.

鈥淲e decided to include them as we have enjoyed knowing more about the students, their musical passions, and aspirations,鈥� Encarnaci贸n said. 鈥淭his also gives us (the jazz faculty) an opportunity to build upon their jazz skills to further develop more advanced jazz concepts.鈥�

Among these faculty efforts is a new composition by Darling, Crunch, designed to introduce students to extended jazz harmonies.

The festival will also feature Bring on the Storm, a new work by Jasper Kashou ’24, a 麻豆影院 alumnus now studying jazz composition and performance at the University of North Texas.

This combination of pedagogy and composition lies at the heart of Sturm鈥檚 legacy, along with the Conservatory鈥檚 tradition of inviting professional musicians to perform evening concerts. Previous guests have included a vast array of jazz luminaries, including Dizzy Gillespie, Samara Joy, Diana Krall, Bobby McFerrin, and Cassandra Wilson.

This year鈥檚 guest artists carry on that tradition. Vocalist Ren茅 Marie鈥�7:30 p.m. Friday in Memorial Chapel鈥攈as cemented her reputation as not only a singer but also a composer, arranger, theatrical performer, and teacher. Guided and tempered by powerful life lessons and rooted in jazz traditions laid down by Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, and other leading artists of past generations, she borrows various elements of folk, R&B and even classical and country to create a captivating hybrid style.

Sean Jones鈥�7:30 p.m. Saturday in Memorial Chapel鈥攂rings an artistic vision of trumpeter, bandleader, composer, educator, and activist. He turned a six-month stint with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra into an offer from Wynton Marsalis for a permanent position as lead trumpeter, a post he held from 2004 until 2010. In 2015, Jones was tapped to become a member of the SFJAZZ Collective. He has kept a core group of talented musicians together, producing and releasing eight recordings on the Mack Avenue Records; the latest is his 2017 release,聽Sean Jones: Live from the Jazz Bistro.

Among those combatants are students of the recently founded JGEI. More than 30 麻豆影院 students are involved in the group, which endeavors to broaden jazz inclusivity in the Conservatory and beyond by highlighting the contributions of women and non-binary jazz artists. The group meets weekly.

Pike, a double major in music performance (piano-jazz emphasis) and Spanish from Omaha, Nebraska,聽and her co-president, Shanley, a music performance (double bass) and music education major from Cedar Rapids, Iowa,聽have noted the marginalization of women in the genre for many years. When the group conducted demographic research two years ago, they found that only about 10% of 尝补飞谤别苍肠别鈥檚 jazz students identified as a gender other than cisgender male.

Shanley聽has noticed that the more advanced the musical setting in jazz, the less women seem to be present.

鈥淵oung women 鈥� see their band director is a man and there鈥檚 no women in the high school jazz band [and conclude] 鈥業 don鈥檛 think this is really something for me鈥�,鈥� Shanley said.

The female jazz musicians most people know are the singers鈥擡lla Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, for instance. Historically, women have been pushed out of instrumental pursuits, leading to perceptions they are not serious musicians, but merely entertainers.

鈥淸Singers] also had to deal with a lot of sexualization and different kinds of treatment,鈥� Pike said.

At the Nov. 3-4 Jazz Celebration Weekend, Pike and Shanley took part in the JGEI combo group, joined by fellow 麻豆影院 students Jozelle Filippi, Mallory Meyer, Taylor Nordeng, Sarah Pedlar, Yv Radaza, Kate Stenson, and Elizabeth Williams.

The musical guests at this year鈥檚 Jazz Celebration Weekend evening concerts were two woman-led ensembles: the Alicia Olatuja Quintet and the Magos Herrera Quartet.

Blue Nile was the song of choice for the JGEI because composer Alice Coltrane is often overshadowed by her husband, John Coltrane. The group found this work in The New Standards, a book of 101 jazz songs by women composers, prepared by Terri Lyne Carrington.

The JGEI ensemble was invited to perform by Patty Darling, instructor of music, and Jos茅 Encarnaci贸n, associate professor of music and director of jazz studies.

鈥淧atty and Jos茅 have been really supportive since the beginning,鈥� Shanley said.聽

鈥淭he outreach that JGEI is doing on our LU campus is so important,鈥� Darling said. 鈥淭hey are working to create an inclusive and nurturing environment for all students in our jazz program and are raising awareness of the amazing contributions of women composers and performers, past and present. The activities they are organizing鈥攃oncerts, movie nights, listening parties, meetings鈥攁ll of these events help to support and expand the growing movement in the jazz world toward gender equality.鈥�

The Jazz Celebration Weekend experience is building momentum, the students said.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a really powerful thing to play in a band of all women,鈥� Pike said. Shanley added, 鈥淛ust to see how it can be different is really exciting.鈥�

鈥淲ith evening performances by incredible guest artists Alicia Olatuja and Magos Herrera, and LU student groups performing throughout the day, it is a joy to celebrate and recognize the contributions of women in jazz at this year鈥檚 festival,鈥� said Patty Darling, instructor of music and director of the award-winning 麻豆影院 University Jazz Ensemble.

Jazz Weekend was the vision of the late Fred Sturm, who launched it as a non-competitive music festival for high school and middle school students interested in playing and learning about jazz. It has attracted a long list of jazz luminaries who have performed on the Memorial Chapel stage, among them Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis, Diana Krall, Bobby McFerrin, and Cassandra Wilson. Last year鈥檚 Jazz Weekend festival included a concert by Samara Joy, who would go on to win Best New Artist honors at the Grammy Awards four months later.

鈥淲e are excited to have 27 groups from 18 different schools here this year,鈥� Darling said. 鈥淚n addition, there will be lots of performances from 麻豆影院 jazz groups including six combos, Jazz Band and Jazz Ensemble.鈥�

The goal of Fred Sturm Jazz Celebration Weekend is to create a low-stress clinic environment鈥攏o trophies or ratings鈥攅arly in the school year, and inspire students with workshops led by renowned clinicians and 麻豆影院 faculty, Darling said. Students learn about improvisation, jazz language and style, and get the opportunity to hear performances from other schools.聽

Olatuja gained global recognition for her vocal performance during President Obama鈥檚 second inauguration, and she has been praised in the聽New York Times聽as 鈥渁 singer with a strong and luscious tone.鈥�

7:30 p.m. Nov. 4: Magos Herrera Quartet. A dazzling jazz singer-songwriter, producer, and educator known for her sultry voice and unique presence in the Latin American jazz scene,聽Magos Herrera鈥檚聽style blends contemporary jazz with Ibero-American melodies and rhythms, transcending language barriers. In addition, 麻豆影院 students Reese Pike and Vivian Shanley have formed a new student group, the Jazz and Gender Equity Initiative (JGEI), which champions the contributions women and non-binary people have made to the art form of jazz. They have organized performance events on campus and done other outreach. A combo comprised of JGEI members will be performing on the Saturday afternoon showcase concert.聽

Some of the visiting high school and middle school bands will play commissioned charts that Conservatory faculty and students provided in advance. 麻豆影院 senior saxophonist Owen Brady composed a Jazz Weekend piece, Bear in Mind, and Darling composed a chart for the bands. That continues a tradition first established by Sturm when he was leading the jazz program.

鈥淲e are honored to continue Fred鈥檚 tradition of a non-competitive festival where everyone is welcome and encouraged to listen, learn, and play together,鈥� Darling said.

Five members of the current 麻豆影院 faculty are set to perform鈥擯atty Darling 鈥�85, Mark Urness, Dane Richeson, Tim Albright, and Jessica Jensen 鈥�10. In addition to Dietrich, alumni scheduled to perform include Allen Cordingley 鈥�02, Craig Hietpas 鈥�93, Ryan Alban 鈥�03, Kate (Nelson) Hardt 鈥�06, Craig Gall 鈥�90, Dave Cooper 鈥�87, Marty Robinson 鈥�91, Paul Dietrich 鈥�10, and Larry Darling 鈥�76.聽The other members of the band are not alums but are connected to Sturm:聽Tom Washatka, who taught in the Conservatory, John Kirchberger, who performed with Sturm in the band Matrix in the 1970s, and Mike Wagner, who took music lessons with Sturm early in his tenure at 麻豆影院.

Harmon, a jazz pianist and composer who taught in the Conservatory when the Class of 1973 came through, will join the concert for a special solo piano piece, Breathing, that Sturm wrote during the time he was battling cancer.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a great band and the music is so good,鈥� Dietrich said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 going to be such a meaningful occasion.鈥�

尝补飞谤别苍肠别鈥檚 jazz program, now led by Jos茅 Encarnaci贸n, continues to thrive. It was the recipient of two 2023 DownBeat Awards and has won six DownBeats in the past six years, among the highest honors in jazz education.

The Reunion concert is a tribute to Sturm鈥檚 lasting influence.

鈥淭his whole band, almost all of them are music educators of some sort,鈥� Dietrich said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 part of Fred鈥檚 legacy. He鈥檚 got people like that all over the country.鈥�

The聽DownBeatAwards, now in their 46th year and featured in the magazine’s June edition, are among the highest honors in jazz education.聽Pertl called it 鈥渦nprecedented鈥� for two 麻豆影院 ensembles to win top awards in the same year.

鈥淓ven more amazing is that with these two awards, it means that 麻豆影院 has garnered six top DownBeat Awards in the past six years,鈥� he said. 鈥淭hat is a remarkable run.鈥�

The Latin Group award came for a concert performance delivered by the Jazz Band in the fall as part of 尝补飞谤别苍肠别鈥檚 annual Fred Sturm Jazz Celebration Weekend. It featured music from Venezuela, Africa, and Cuba.

鈥淲e went into it with a lot of different concepts about how to approach the music, how to feel the music,鈥� Encarnaci贸n said. 鈥淭his is music that鈥檚 coming from different parts of the world. What was amazing was the response from the students. They embraced everything about it.鈥�

The winning entry in the Large Jazz Ensemble category, meanwhile, came from a series of performances from LUJE last spring and this fall. They featured contemporary music compositions that required a lot of improvisation.

鈥淭he passion, the execution, it was there,鈥� Darling said.

Croasdale鈥檚 piece, Down the Hall (From Us), is part of another Jazz Weekend tradition of featuring student composers. Her piece was released to participating schools as a testament to Sturm鈥檚 belief that jazz should be collaborative and accessible.

Sturm was instrumental鈥攍iterally and figuratively鈥攊n the creation of 尝补飞谤别苍肠别鈥檚 Jazz Studies Department. During his sophomore year at 麻豆影院, he created the Conservatory鈥檚 first jazz ensemble. Later, he returned to serve 26 years on the Conservatory faculty, during which he established Jazz Weekend, which was renamed to honor him posthumously in 2015. Today, 尝补飞谤别苍肠别鈥檚 jazz program has grown to include the 麻豆影院 University Jazz Ensemble (LUJE), the LU Jazz Band, and several small group ensembles. Croasdale performed as a member of LUJE, LU Jazz Band, and a jazz combo.

Down the Hall (From Us) is Croasdale鈥檚 most involved piece to date. Though she has experience composing for jazz combo, this big band composition was a much more extensive project. But after seeing Croasdale鈥檚 work in her composition class, Patty Darling, Croasdale鈥檚 professor and LUJE director, approached her about the project. With Darling鈥檚 guidance, Croasdale worked through the summer to create the pop-inspired piece that was played by some of the bands during Jazz Weekend.

鈥淭he chart she created, Down the Hall (from Us), is beautifully designed for middle and high school bands,鈥� Darling said. 鈥淚t is challenging to write jazz music for younger ensembles that teach fundamental concepts and motivate students to practice, and Lucy did an awesome job with this Jazz Weekend chart. The piece is catchy, easy, and fun to play, with limited material presented in interesting ways.鈥�

Croasdale spent much of her time brainstorming different ideas. Whether on saxophone, piano, or her voice alone, she would search for melodies that fit through experimentation鈥攕imilar to her improvisation process.

鈥淚mprovising is just composing on the spot,鈥� Croasdale said. 鈥淲hen I play something, and I like it, I鈥檒l just keep trying to work with that, and if I don鈥檛, I鈥檒l move on.鈥�

Croasdale鈥檚 composition aims to be fun for its players. The piece features saxophone melodies in their lower registers, something she loves playing herself. Though she had heard LUJE鈥檚 performance of the piece, she hadn鈥檛 seen a learning group play it until Jazz Weekend.

鈥淚t鈥檚 nice to hear it to have in mind what seemed easy for them, what was more difficult, because you definitely get a little out of touch being at a Conservatory,鈥� Croasdale said. 鈥淚 hope they like it.”

Croasdale got the opportunity to listen to two bands perform the piece, and even got the chance to play with one of them on bari sax. She said she was both happy and relieved to see the students enjoying the piece.聽 聽聽

Though Croasdale now considers music to be about having fun, she didn鈥檛 start to enjoy jazz until she became comfortable with the style.

鈥淏ecause my mom is a jazz musician鈥攕he plays bass鈥擨 was dragged along to a lot of events,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 was like, 鈥榯his is really boring and don’t like it.鈥欌��

But that all changed in high school when a band director convinced her to join jazz band. She soon fell in love with it.

Croasdale loves the fun and exciting saxophone parts in jazz music. It has brought her unique experiences and thrilling travel opportunities. Croasdale began her higher education by studying jazz at 麻豆影院, and she intends to continue her jazz studies in graduate school.

Croasdale has enjoyed the jazz opportunities at 麻豆影院, especially the LUJE concert with Liam Teague during Jazz Celebration Weekend.

鈥淚t鈥檚 always fun to have a guest artist with the band because we’ve been playing these same pieces over and over for a few weeks,鈥� she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 all of a sudden very different when the music gets 鈥榝illed in.鈥� It’s always interesting to hear someone鈥檚 perspective on the music we鈥檙e playing.鈥�

Joy is in concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 4 in Memorial Chapel.

Teague and the Jazz Ensemble, LU Jazz Faculty, and LUPE (麻豆影院 University Percussion Ensemble) will be in concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5, also in Memorial Chapel. Tickets for each performance are $25-$30, .

This will mark the first fully in-person Jazz Weekend since 2019. The weekend was limited to the 麻豆影院 community last year because of pandemic restrictions.

鈥淲e鈥檙e really excited to have all the students back from the high schools and middle schools,鈥� said Jos茅 L. Encarnaci贸n, associate professor of music and director of jazz studies.

Encarnaci贸n and Patty Darling, instructor of music and director of the award-winning LU Jazz Ensemble, together with Jillian Johnson, director of conservatory programming, are organizing this year’s聽Jazz Weekend.聽聽There is huge enthusiasm from the 18 schools that are bringing their bands to campus, Darling said.

鈥淔red intended this to be a non-competitive festival,鈥� she said. 鈥淭he focus is on learning. There are no trophies. Nobody wins. It is, just come in, learn jazz language 补苍诲听style, and explore improvisation.鈥�

The weekend will include a focus on women in jazz, from composers to performers. Continuing Sturm鈥檚 tradition, 麻豆影院聽senior Lucy Croasdale, a saxophone student, and Darling have created聽new, free jazz聽ensemble compositions聽that have been distributed聽to all participating schools.聽

There is a buzz about the Samara Joy performance slotted for Friday night. She followed up her winning the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International聽Jazz Vocal Competition with the 2021 release of a self-titled debut album,聽backed by the Pasquale Grasso Trio.聽She was then signed by Verve Records, and her Verve debut, Linger Awhile, was released last month.

鈥淪he鈥檚 just amazing,鈥� Encarnaci贸n said. 鈥淪he鈥檚 like 22 and people are already comparing her to Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald. Those are big, big names. She comes from a family of musicians and she鈥檚 drawing on so many influences. At that early age, to be at that level with her control, her range, her maturity in her singing, it鈥檚 just incredible.鈥�

Teague, meanwhile, brings a different sound than what鈥檚 been featured at Jazz Weekend in the past.

Encarnaci贸n first met Teague, head of steelpan studies and professor of music at Northern Illinois University, during an online music conference in the midst of the pandemic.

鈥淚 was completely blown away by the way he plays that instrument,鈥� Encarnaci贸n said.

Jazz Weekend organizers are working to place a camera above Teague so the audience can see his hand movements on an overhead screen during the performance.

鈥淭he band is loving his music,鈥� Darling said of the Jazz Ensemble rehearsals. 鈥淗e sent four charts to rehearse and his music is beautiful. It鈥檚 some of the most rhythmically, melodically connected music I鈥檝e ever heard. 鈥� It鈥檚 challenging but it鈥檚 so much fun to play.鈥�

Ike Sturm + HEART, with featured guest Donny McCaslin, will be in concert in the Chapel at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Sturm is the son of the late Fred Sturm, who helped launch and lead 尝补飞谤别苍肠别鈥檚 jazz program during his more than 25 years on the 麻豆影院 faculty. He passed away in 2014 following a long battle with cancer.

Saturday鈥檚 concert will be a special celebration of Fred Sturm鈥檚 legacy.

Brian Pertl, dean of the Conservatory, said the 40th anniversary is a special time to honor everything Sturm brought to 麻豆影院. Adding the campus-wide workshops was done with Sturm in mind.

鈥淔red Sturm loved jazz, improvisation, and the community it created,鈥� Pertl said.

He launched Jazz Celebration Weekend in 1981 as a non-competitive music event, bringing high school and middle school students to campus to play, learn about, and celebrate jazz. The pandemic has altered things this year, but it has not dimmed the enthusiasm.

鈥淲e will still have our two amazing evening concerts, but since we couldn鈥檛 welcome the 1,000 high school musicians who usually attend, we came up with the idea to honor Fred by making the event a campus celebration of jazz and improvisation and musical exploration for our entire 麻豆影院 community,鈥� Pertl said.聽鈥淚n her matriculation convocation, President Carter urged us to find comfort with discomfort, to try new things, dive into new experiences.聽Here is our chance to try improvisatory dance, songwriting, jazz singing, Deep Listening, samba drumming, Balinese gamelan, a big band session for anyone who plays any instrument, and an improvising orchestra for classical strings players who have never improvised before. What better way to take a break from the stresses of eighth聽week than to move and groove and sing and dance.聽Fred would be beaming from ear to ear, and I can鈥檛 think of a better way to honor his love of jazz and his legacy as a virtuoso educator.鈥�

There also will be Saturday concerts featuring the 麻豆影院 University Jazz Combos and the 麻豆影院 University Jazz Band.聽The Jazz Combos perform from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Harper Hall. The Jazz Band will perform from 1 to 2 p.m. in Room 163 of the Music-Drama Center. Both have free admission. You can access the聽.

The new workshops added this year for the campus community have free admission.

The Saturday workshops include:

• Dance Collective with Margaret Paek, 10 a.m.-noon in Esch Studio;

• Songwriting with Loren Dempster, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in Shattuck 156;

• Deep Listening with Brian Pertl and Leila Ramagopal Pertl, 2-3 p.m. in Shattuck 156;

• Fundamentals of Jazz Singing with Janet Planet and John Harmon, 2-3 p.m. in Harper Hall;

• Improv for All with Patty Darling and 麻豆影院 jazz students, 3-4 p.m. in Shattuck 156;

• Jazz for Strings with Matt Turner, 3-4 p.m. in Shattuck 163;

• Balinese Gamelan with Sonja Downing and Dewa Adnyana, 3-4 p.m. in Mursell House;

• Samba Drumming with the Sambistas, 4-5 p.m. in Shattuck 163.

鈥淪everal of these workshops and all of the concerts will be livestreamed so our Jazz Weekend high school and middle school students and directors can participate as well,鈥� Darling said. 鈥淲e are excited about this opportunity to bring everyone together to create, connect and explore, as well as showcase some of the great things happening in our Conservatory.鈥�
