The award honors teachers who create a sense of excitement for and enthusiasm about learning; actively engage students and motivate them to do their best work; contribute to the well-being of their school and its community; and are committed to the personal growth of their students.

Barnhill was nominated by senior Olivia Bahn, an English/creative writing major from Neenah. Barnhill has been teaching at St. Mary Catholic Schools since 2015. She was awarded the SMCS Faculty Leadership Award in 2021 and the SMCS Promising Innovation Award in 2016.

Del Ponte was nominated by senior Marissa Polzin, a chemistry major from Sturtevant. Del Ponte has been teaching at Union Grove since 2011. He advises the National Honor Society and is an assistant girls soccer coach.

麻豆影院 has been awarding these honors to outstanding Wisconsin teachers since 1985, thanks to the support of a generous donor.

The聽麻豆影院 Awards for Outstanding Teaching in Wisconsin聽recognize two secondary school teachers each year with a monetary award to the educator and a donation to that school鈥檚 library. The teachers are nominated by 麻豆影院 seniors who attended school in Wisconsin, and recipients are selected by a committee of education faculty from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Conservatory of Music.聽

The award honors teachers who create a sense of excitement for and enthusiasm about learning; actively engage students and motivate them to do their best work; contribute to the well-being of their school and its community; and are committed to the personal growth of their students.

Rundquist was nominated by 麻豆影院 senior Spencer Millay, who will be receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in history at the June 9 Commencement. He plans to pursue a career in social studies teaching. In his nomination, Millay wrote: 鈥淐hris is passionate about what he teaches, he cares about the school culture, and he wants to see his students succeed.鈥�

Millay went on to describe the personal attention Rundquist gives every student and how he encouraged his own steps into teaching by, among other things, inviting him to lead a lesson in a practicum. He also noted the care Rundquist demonstrated as the school鈥檚 wrestling coach.

Schroeter was nominated by Nicolas Magnuson, who will be receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in physics. In his nomination, Magnuson wrote, 鈥淒r. Schroeter, a 麻豆影院 alum, embodies the heart and spirit of impactful science education daily鈥� and that 鈥淒r. Schroeter consistently stands out among the already spectacular teaching staff鈥� by 鈥渉arnessing his sincere adoration for science to inspire and bring out the best of students in his class.鈥�

Magnuson described the extra time and effort Schroeter put into helping students hone their skills and further their understanding of the subject matter.

Pelle was nominated by graduating senior Anna White, who called her a 鈥渒ind-hearted, passionate English teacher and drama director.鈥�

White, a biology and Russian studies double major, said Pelle鈥檚 teaching made a 鈥渓ong-lasting positive impact鈥� on her and other students at the high school.

鈥淪he cultivates an upbeat, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment that encourages students to learn through a variety of versatile methods. 鈥� She vivaciously puts her heart and soul into everything she does, and it shows on every student鈥檚 face that has the pleasure of working with her.鈥�

Carlton was nominated by graduating senior Rachel Draxler, who said his teaching infused in her a love of music that she will carry with her even though she is not studying music at 麻豆影院. A government major, Draxler said Carlton 鈥渕ade my love of music a true investment in my personal growth and education.鈥�

His teaching provided a beautiful transition to 麻豆影院, Draxler said.

鈥淗e always made sure his students understood the significance of learning in multiple areas of study, and how my knowledge in one subject can help me succeed in others. This is also what makes 麻豆影院 special. The interdisciplinary study of liberal arts helps us become well-rounded individuals who can engage in the world around us from many perspectives.鈥�

The awards ceremony will be held June 11 on the 麻豆影院 campus.

Burdick-Shepherd earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree from Transylvania University, a master鈥檚 from Montclair State University, and a M.Phil and Ph.D. from Columbia University.

We caught up with her to talk about interests in and out of the classroom.

In the classroom

Inside info:聽What鈥檚 one thing you want every student coming into your classes to know about you?

That I don鈥檛 have all the answers and I am not looking for perfection. I love it when students ask questions that I can鈥檛 answer right away or that sends us looking in a new direction as a class. When we allow real curiosity into our classrooms as instructors, when we make room for things like play and our vulnerable selves making mistakes, this is when the magic thing called learning happens.

Getting energized:聽What work have you done or will you be doing at 麻豆影院 that gets you the most excited?

I had the opportunity to present a working paper at the annual Philosophy of Education national conference in March of 2022 with Michelle Johnson, a 麻豆影院 alum and one of the first elementary student teachers to graduate from 麻豆影院. We are writing about the practices of hope but also the very real anger and frustration that educators experienced as part of their profession throughout the pandemic, and I can鈥檛 wait to see this writing published. The voice of K-12 educators is missing in U.S. educational policy changes of the 21st聽century, and to see former students challenging this makes me feel hopeful in this messy world.

Going places:聽Is there an example of somewhere your career has taken you (either a physical space or something more intellectual, emotional or spiritual) that took you by surprise?

Finland, specifically one of its most northern cities, Oulu. My second year here I traveled to Finnish universities and schools for 10 days. Even though I had read about it, it is something else entirely to see an entire country where K-12 teaching is a revered profession. I was sitting on the train one afternoon and there was this couple sitting across from me and they were grinning from ear to ear. I asked why they were so happy and the man said, 鈥淥h, we just found out that she was accepted into university to be a teacher! She is amazing, the program is so competitive.鈥� And it really is, students work really hard for many years to become educators there and the public absolutely respects the work. I am continuously reminding my family that if we get an opportunity, we will move there.聽

Out of the classroom

This or that:聽If you weren鈥檛 teaching for a living, what would you be doing?聽

I would probably be teaching in some way.聽I just told this story to the students in the course, A Call to Teach. I tried to run away from teaching as a profession for so many years in so many ways and I am always called back.

Right at home:聽Whether for work, relaxation or reflection, what鈥檚 your favorite spot on campus?

I love Bjorklunden! I especially love the woods on that part of the Door County campus. I have walked them in all seasons and the trees are never still, always speaking. I wouldn鈥檛 be surprised if a fairy or a small gnome popped out of one someday. And I really love the way everyone has to help clean and cook while there; it鈥檚 very Montessori. My daughters also think it is the best 鈥渉otel鈥� in the entire world.

One book, one recording, one film:聽Name one of each that speaks to your soul? Or you would recommend to a friend? Or both?

Oh goodness, this is an impossible question for me, really. I read all the time, mostly fiction but in almost every genre. I have two kids and we are just coming out of this pandemic so both my music listening and movie watching has been oriented toward stuff the whole family loves. So, I鈥檓 just going to answer A Wrinkle in Time for all three answers (but seriously).聽A Wrinkle in Time was a book I loved as a child, and I find that adults get so much out of it when they re-read it or read it for the first time. The movie, A Wrinkle in Time, that came out a few years ago is magical and captures the precipice of adolescence within that question of good and evil in a really lovely way. And the soundtrack to the movie never fails to lift me up, especially Warrior by Chloe x Halle.
