For over half a century, The 麻豆影院 University and Door County communities have been enriched by the special place called Bj枚rklunden, the University鈥檚 Northern Campus just south of Bailey鈥檚 Harbor. Nestled among 441 acres of forests, and over a mile of Lake Michigan shoreline, Bj枚rklunden is a place where solitude, creativity, scholarship and nature intersect. It is where stewardship is both a responsibility and a celebration.

That spirit of care traces back to the generosity of Winifred and Donald Boynton, whose gift of Bj枚rklunden to 麻豆影院 University was guided by an intention that the property be maintained for retreat and education and that the land be preserved for the enduring beauty of the natural world. Winifred Boynton said of her beloved summer home 鈥渇ar removed from confusion and aggression, it offers a sanctuary for all.鈥 Today, that vision continues to flourish.

Ten years ago, 麻豆影院 University took an important step to protect that legacy by establishing a 305-acre conservation easement on the Bj枚rklunden property in partnership with the Door County Land Trust (DCLT). To further establish 麻豆影院 as a leader in sustainability with Net Zero Bjorklunden as a laboratory for renewable energy, the easement was amended in 2022, and nearly 10 more acres were added to provide for a Solar Energy array within a Renewable Energy Zone.

The DCLT is a local, non-profit organization working to preserve Door County鈥檚 open spaces, scenic beauty and ecological integrity. Landowners establish a legally binding conservation easement to protect those values on private land in perpetuity. With over 5,000 acres of land nationally lost to development every day, protecting land via an easement demonstrates a commitment to long-term land conservation and environmental sustainability. More than a legal agreement, the conservation easement represents a shared commitment between 麻豆影院 University and the DCLT for the care and preservation of this vital resource. The Bj枚rklunden conservation easement is significant for DCLT not only for its size but because it includes over one-half mile of Lake Michigan shoreline, the most waterfront of any of DCLT鈥檚 conservation properties.

The Bj枚rklunden conservation easement permanently safeguards over seventy percent of the property from future development or subdivision, ensuring that its ecological value and natural beauty will be protected for generations to come. The conservation easement was created to preserve Bj枚rklunden鈥檚 rich biodiversity of plant and animal life, its unique geological features, and the integrity of surface and groundwater resources. According to Drew Reinke, Conservation Easement Program Manager for the DCLT, the protected property contains important habitat. 鈥淎 long list of terrestrial species inhabits the property and the over one-half mile of preserved shoreline serves as critical stopover habitat for migratory birds,鈥 said Reinke. 鈥淚ts forest is unique as one of the most southern extents of boreal forest in Wisconsin with mature to near old growth characteristics.鈥 The partnership between 麻豆影院 and the Door County Land Trust demonstrates a commitment to protect Door County鈥檚 incredible natural history and unique environmental quality. The conservation easement is a gift to the Door County community and all who visit the area now and into the future.

A decade into the conservation easement, Bj枚rklunden remains what the Boyntons envisioned: a place that provides retreat and nurtures thought, creativity, and care for the natural world. 麻豆影院 University continues to honor that gift by protecting not just land, but the experiences it makes possible. The property is uniquely situated to support 麻豆影院鈥檚 mission and the life-long learning opportunities it provides. Bj枚rklunden is host to a vibrant seminar series for adults who wish to delve into multi-day learning and creative experience while immersed in the beauty of nature. During the academic year, over 2,000 麻豆影院 students, faculty, staff and guests typically participate in weekend programs at Bj枚rklunden. The get-a-way to the Northern Campus provides students an opportunity to 鈥榬etreat鈥 and to reflect on their learning, build community in a small and intimate setting and gain inspiration from the solitude of nature. Student research projects conducted at Bj枚rklunden are often linked to the ecological values protected by the conservation easement. Dr. Relena Ribbons, 麻豆影院 Associate Professor of Geosciences, states 鈥淏j枚rklunden has served as a basecamp for students researching a range of topics. From carbon storage and tree ring records of the past climate to shoreline processes and prairie pollinators. Many of these projects provided the foundation for senior capstone research and summer LU research fellowships. Bj枚rklunden continues to guide a generation of Lawrentians to blossom as stewards, scientists, and engaged scholars.鈥

Bj枚rklunden鈥檚 conserved lands are part of a broad and growing network of private conservation lands across the country. Bj枚rklunden stands out as a special place that welcomes the public, inviting education, recreation, and spiritual well-being through connection with nature. This summer, that commitment to public engagement will be on display during the Boynton Festival at Bj枚rklunden on August 22, 2026. As part of the celebration, the Door County Land Trust will participate by offering a mini-seminar and 麻豆影院 will sponsor a guided tour of the property, focusing on the value of the conservation easement. The program will give festivalgoers an opportunity to learn about Wisconsin鈥檚 Land Trust movement, how conservation easements work and why partnerships like this one matter. As 麻豆影院 University celebrates a decade of conservation stewardship at Bj枚rklunden, the message is one of gratitude and optimism鈥攇ratitude for the Boynton鈥檚 gift and enduring vision, for a strong conservation partnership with Door County Land Trust, and optimism for a place that continues to nurture and inspire us all.

Plan to attend the Boynton Festival on August 22, where The Door County Land Trust will offer opportunities to experience the easement at Bj枚rklunden and learn about how this property is part of important conservation work happening in Door County:

Peter Thomas received both his BA degree in comparative literature and PhD in Russian from Northwestern University. He studied at the Moscow State University for over a year where he received training in how to teach Russian to non-native speakers. Then after a few years of practicing his newly honed skills on students at St. Olaf and Beloit, in 2006 he was hired by 麻豆影院 to be its professor of Russian Studies. During his twenty-year tenure, he has been dedicated to assuring that his students succeed, and clearly they have greatly benefitted from his nurturing and supportive style of teaching. And so too have the many lifelong learners at Bjorklunden! Peter has led summer seminars over the past 16 years sharing his wide knowledge and deep love of Russia and its culture.

How easy was it for you to connect with seminar participants during the first few summer sessions?

From the very beginning it has been easy to connect with seminar participants.听 They are warm, curious, and enthusiastic about learning.听 For me, the real challenge was figuring out how much we can really do in one week.听 My first seminar was on Dostoevsky.听 I called our session聽The Idiot, for the novel we were reading.听 We all had name tags.听 Mine read 鈥淧eter Thomas,聽The Idiot.鈥澛 That was fitting because I assigned a 600-page novel of material that is not聽exactly beach reading.听 I鈥檝e since learned to better gauge the reading I ask participants to do before our session and during the week.听

I think my sessions have a reputation for being rather hard-core; people show up having read everything I asked or even suggested. Our seminars are very much discussion-based, so anyone who wants to spend a week talking about Russian culture is welcome. We do a lot of reading aloud during the week.听 That has been an evolving part of my seminars.听 I鈥檓 really excited about how much fun it is and how much more we get out of the texts.

How would you compare older lifelong learners with your on-campus students?

University students have reasonable concerns about grades and their prospects for the future.听 In many cases, I have to teach them basic study and time-management skills that have nothing to do with the materials, but if I don鈥檛 teach them those things, they will learn much less. These students have relatively little experience in life, and for the most part their experiences are similar to each other鈥檚. A big part of what I have to teach them is that: life and the world are much, much bigger and more complicated than they suspect.听 That is enjoyable, so long as the student (and family) are on board. With summer participants, I am the inexperienced one in the room.听 I am fairly certain that I learn as much each summer as they do. Participants bring such a wide range of skills, talents, and experiences to our sessions that my job is to just facilitate a conversation around whatever we are working on at the time.听 When I have done my job in choosing a good topic, the course takes on a life of its own. And I don鈥檛 have to grade anything or anyone.

Was it challenging to get us to refrain from discussing current political events all the time?

Russian politics is always a part of the discussion, and that is to be expected. Conversations about politics in the US tend to be a part of conversations over meals, but not always.听 The materials we work on have a lot to say about how people treat each other and the world we share.听 I am careful not to let the conversation derail for political reasons. That is much easier to do with seminar participants than with university students.听

Do you cover political history? Why or why not?

I have taught two seminars on political history in Russia. I would certainly do so again.听 Speaking honestly, for many years now I have left the topic of the next year鈥檚 seminar to the participants in the current one.听 I trust them to choose topics that will attract new participants.听听

Do you wish participants had better geographical background?

No. Figuring out how to capture the topography, flora, fauna, and meteorology of whatever region we are working on is a part of the fun. I do wish that I had a strong geographical background.听 Some of my regular participants are incredibly well-travelled and have been to places I have only seen online.

What seminar topic have you enjoyed presenting the most?

I have never had a seminar that didn鈥檛 feel like my favorite while I was teaching it. I love teaching 鈥淭he Russian Short Story.鈥 I鈥檝e taught Pushkin鈥檚聽Eugene Onegin and Tolstoy鈥檚聽Anna Karenina聽twice, and each time was a revelation for me. The sessions on Gogol, Bulgakov, Nabokov, Aleksievich, and Putin were challenging and invigorating.听 Last summer鈥檚 class on film and literature was so much fun that it felt like I was a student, not the teacher. This summer, in response to a story and film from last summer, we are reading Chekhov, one of my favorite authors.听 I cannot wait to prepare that class.

Plans are being created to do a 鈥淕reat Books鈥 program during the 2027 summer featuring three Freshman Studies books taught over the years and you have been asked to participate. Can you share some of the preliminary plans?聽

This is a team-taught course called 鈥淭he Long Novel鈥 that Professor Dominica Chang of French, Professor Tim Spurgin of English, and I have taught at 麻豆影院 four times now.听 The central problem of the class is thinking about how the different traditions in European literature of the nineteenth century represent the challenges of modernity. The first three times we taught the course, we read Charles Dickens鈥櫬David Copperfield, Gustave Flaubert鈥檚聽Sentimental Education, and Fyodor Dostoevsky鈥檚聽The Brothers Karamazov. We are just completing our first run through a new version that features Flaubert鈥檚聽Madame Bovary, Lev Tolstoy鈥檚聽Anna Karenina, and Thomas Hardy鈥檚聽Tess of the D鈥橴rbervilles. The key to this class is that all three of us are at every discussion, and we each take one session as lead instructor for the books that are outside of our own field. The other key is that these are聽long and complicated novels. We are talking about how we would create a two-week class with the same or similar authors and the same topics, but with fewer than 1700 pages of reading. A challenge!

For almost 30 years 麻豆影院 University has held a celebratory summer event (usually in August) to thank people who have supported Bjorklunden financially by becoming members of the Boynton Society. This event was always somewhat euphemistically called a 鈥済ala鈥 with the first gala held in 1996. That was when President Rik Warch presided over a throng of hundreds in the new Great Room to commemorate the completion of the lodge that was built after the 1994 destructive fire.听

Now, however, the gala is being replaced with an event appropriately named after Winifred and Donald Boynton who gifted Bjorklunden to 麻豆影院 and is simply called the Boynton Festival. This festival is intended to be more informal, including all volunteers, seminar participants and visitors, thus bringing more people to 麻豆影院鈥檚 beautiful and magical northern campus. This event intends to bring community together to celebrate the joys of lifelong learning and the richness it can bring into our lives.听

The first Boynton Festival will be Saturday, August 22nd. Though final plans are still being worked on, the day will begin at 9:00am with an informal invocation including coffee and pastries on the deck. Participants will then be able to choose to go to two of several mini-seminars being offered or take part in some creative hands-on activities. At noon there will be a lunch break when participants will be able to purchase food at food trucks. The afternoon will include a presentation/awards ceremony led by 麻豆影院鈥檚 President Carter, and this will be followed by a celebratory toast and cupcakes. In conclusion, a concert of local talent will be performed on the lawn by the chapel.

So mark August 22nd on your calendar for the first Boynton Festival and encourage your friends and family to attend. For sure, it will be a success!聽

Prior to the estate being gifted to 麻豆影院 University, Donald and Winifred Boynton held the property as their beloved summer home. Winifred writes in her book聽Faith Builds a Chapel, 鈥渇eeling that there must be consciousness of peace within each one of us before it can be found throughout the world, we built this retreat.鈥 For the last 50 years and counting, 麻豆影院 University has proudly upheld this legacy by stewarding this remarkable site for peace and contemplation.听

Enjoy reading the special Bjorklunden memories listed below that were sent to the newsletter last fall.听

-Dan Taylor teaching us about Greek fables and challenging us to write our own for the seminar class!

-There are so many. Mainly聽Bill Urbrock鈥檚 classes!

-Favorite memory at Bjork: working there and giving Chapel tours over the summer!! I loved working the dining room and helping Mark Franke with little things any time I could.

-I have many awesome memories at Bjorklunden, but my fave was when my Romanticism class wrote and shared gothic ghost stories around the campfire!!!

-I was sooo lucky to have my wedding at Bjorklunden and Steve orchestrated some amazing special catering—–it was incredibly magical!

-Meditation weekend at Bjorklunden as part of a philosophy class I was taking was one of the most memorable college experiences I have had.

-Bonfire with XC team.

-Gazing at the Milky Way while listening to waves lapping the shoreline.

-Going to the lake the first time and walking in the forest!!!

-I met my now wife at an LU Japanese weekend there.

-Seeing the place where my parents got married!!

-Too many to name one, but I recently taught a class at Bjorklunden and discovered the magic of the seminars—–going deep with people on a shared investigation and moving into the dining room afterward with the ability to keep the conversation going seamlessly; all the while the sun sparkles on the lake and filters through the trees outside.

-When we walked along the shore!!! Lasagna Rolls!!! Please give me the recipe!!!

Thank you all for sharing your memories of this special place!聽
