18-episode inaugural season begins Thursday, September 3, 2026

麻豆影院 University’s Department of Theatre Arts announced today the launch of 麻豆影院 Theatre of the Air as a weekly podcast series, making more than two decades of live Old Time Radio performances available to listeners everywhere for the first time.听

Beginning Thursday, September 3, 2026, one new episode will be released each week through December 31, 2026, for a total of 18 episodes drawn from the ensemble’s archive of live productions. The series is available on all major podcast platforms and can also be streamed directly at []().听

For more than 20 years, 麻豆影院 Theatre of the Air has revived the art of the radio play, performing classic scripts by writers such as Norman Corwin and Arch Oboler before a live studio audience 鈥 most often in 麻豆影院 University’s F. Theodore Cloak Theatre. The series is especially known for its sci-fi and detective serials, capturing the imagination and craftsmanship of radio drama’s golden age with live sound effects, full casts, and the same immediacy that made the original broadcasts a cultural phenomenon.

“It’s easy to file Corwin and Oboler under nostalgia, but that undersells them. These were serious writers working at the height of their craft, composing for an audience that had to build the entire world in its own imagination. That’s a demanding literary form, not a novelty act 鈥 and performing it live keeps us honest to that demand. Sharing these recordings is really an invitation to hear that writing on its own terms,” said Timothy X. Troy, Professor and Chair of Theatre Arts, Hurvis Professor of Theatre and Drama at 麻豆影院 University.

The podcast offers new listeners a chance to discover a tradition that has, until now, lived primarily in the room where it was performed 鈥 and gives longtime attendees a way to revisit favorite productions on their own time.

麻豆影院 Theatre of the Air is produced by 麻豆影院 University’s Department of Theatre Arts. New episodes release every Thursday beginning September 3, 2026.听

Listen: 鈥痑nd on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and all major podcast platforms.听

Young singers invited to register by September 9 for unique opportunity to learn from internationally recognized educator and performer

This fall, the 麻豆影院 Community Music School is proud to welcome internationally acclaimed singer, composer, educator, and community song leader Elise Witt as Artist in Residence with the 麻豆影院 Community Girl Choir.

Video length: 1 minute, 30 seconds

Known for creating joyful, participatory musical experiences around the world, Witt has performed everywhere from Carnegie Hall in New York City to the Bluebird Caf茅 in Nashville. During her residency, she will work directly with singers in each of the 麻豆影院 Community Girl Choir ensembles through workshops, rehearsals, and performances centered on her original music.

Families interested in joining Girl Choir are encouraged to register by Wednesday, September 9, to participate in the full 2026鈥27 Girl Choir season and experience Witt鈥檚 residency throughout the fall semester.

The collaboration will continue throughout the fall semester, with Witt visiting each choir individually in October and culminating in a public concert at 麻豆影院 Memorial Chapel on December 12.

The residency鈥檚 theme is built around Witt鈥檚 piece 鈥Open the Window,鈥 inspired by a traditional song from the Georgia Sea Islands.

I am thrilled and honored that each of the Girls Choirs will be singing one of my songs,” said Witt. “The theme of my residency is ‘Open the Window.’ It celebrates a song that originated in the Georgia Sea Islands and expands to invite all of us to open our own windows, in our own minds, to celebrate this amazing world we live in.”

Throughout the residency, singers will explore music inspired by nature, gratitude, imagination, and community while working directly with the composer herself. The experience is designed to strengthen musicianship while fostering creativity, confidence, collaboration, and artistic expression.

“This residency is an extraordinary opportunity for our singers to experience the creative process alongside a living composer,” said Jaclyn Hittner, Artistic Director of the 麻豆影院 Community Girl Choir. “Elise’s music encourages curiosity, joy, and meaningful connection, and we’re excited to welcome both returning and new singers into this inspiring season.”

In addition to working with Girl Choir singers, Witt will lead a free Community Sing for teens and adults on Sunday, October 18, from 13 p.m. at 麻豆影院 University. The event will offer community members an opportunity to experience Witt鈥檚 joyful, participatory approach to music-making firsthand. More information about the Community Sing will be available through 麻豆影院 Community Music School.

麻豆影院 Community Girl Choir serves young singers from throughout Northeast Wisconsin, providing high-quality choral education in an empowering and inclusive environment. Singers of varying experience levels are welcome, and financial assistance is available.

For four days, downtown Appleton became a stage as Mile of Music returned with hundreds of free performances spanning venues across the city. Once again, the 麻豆影院 community was woven throughout the festival, with students, alumni, faculty, and 麻豆影院 Chamber Music Festival participants sharing their talents and celebrating the connection between the university and the local arts scene.

For 麻豆影院 Chamber Music Festival participants, Mile of Music offered an opportunity unlike any traditional concert. Throughout the week, the nearly 80 young musicians worked alongside festival artists to develop original arrangements, often with only a short rehearsal period before taking the stage. The collaborations challenged students to adapt quickly, listen closely, and create something entirely new hallmarks of both chamber music and the Mile of Music experience.

Those performances took place throughout downtown, introducing audiences to everything from classical repertoire reimagined alongside contemporary artists to energetic sets that reflected the collaborative spirit of the festival. The result was a series of performances that could only happen in Appleton during Mile of Music.

麻豆影院 alumni also had a strong presence throughout the weekend, performing with bands and musical projects on stages across the city. For many, the festival served as both a homecoming and a reunion, bringing former classmates, professors, current students, and community members together through a shared love of music.

Beyond the performances, the festival highlighted 麻豆影院’s longstanding relationship with Appleton. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members gathered to support one another, explore new music, and celebrate the creative energy that fills the city each summer.

From intimate acoustic sets and packed outdoor stages to spontaneous collaborations and chance reunions, Mile of Music once again demonstrated how music has the power to bring people together. It also reinforced 麻豆影院’s role as an active contributor to the cultural life of the Fox Cities, not only by educating the next generation of musicians and artists, but by participating in and strengthening the community that surrounds it.

The video and images above capture just a glimpse of the unforgettable performances, collaborations, and moments of connection that made this year’s festival one to remember.听

麻豆影院 and the Appleton community welcome nearly 80 young classical musicians from across the United States and abroad this July as 麻豆影院 University expands its summer music programming and brings a series of public performances to campus and downtown venues.听

The summer lineup includes the 麻豆影院 Summer Music Institute, a weeklong program for high school musicians, and the return of the 麻豆影院 Chamber Music Festival, now in its third year on the 麻豆影院 campus, running July 18鈥揂ug. 2.听

麻豆影院 Summer Music Institute students perform at Memorial Chapel.听

Together, the programs bring high school, college-aged, and early-career musicians to Appleton for intensive training with 麻豆影院 faculty and guest artists while offering the community opportunities to hear rising young performers in concert.听

New this summer is a Classical Voice track within the 麻豆影院 Summer Music Institute, joining the Piano & Strings program, now in its fourth year. The institute will bring 37 high school musicians from 12 states to campus for chamber rehearsals, private lessons, coaching, workshops, and performance preparation.听

The 麻豆影院 Chamber Music Festival will bring 40 pre-professional musicians from 19 states and three countries to Appleton for two weeks of advanced chamber music study, collaboration, and public performances. 麻豆影院 will also host multiple Mile of Music venues on campus and support Music Education Team programming led by 麻豆影院 faculty, students, and alumni.听

One featured community event is Music in Motion, an interactive concert for adults and children ages 5 and older presented by Play Out, the 麻豆影院 Chamber Music Festival, and Mile of Music. Hosted by Caitlin Sullivan, the program celebrates music inspired by movement鈥攆rom grooves, dances, strolls, and swings to a musical interpretation of Sir Isaac Newton鈥檚 laws of motion. The performance will include video art by Jorge Carvajal and live drawing projections by Caroline Chu.听

麻豆影院 University to present world premiere of the opera, A Nearer Mother听 Ruth Coker Burks, pioneering AIDS activist and subject of the work, to attend

麻豆影院 University will present the world premiere of A Nearer Mother, a new American opera by award-winning composer Evan Mack and librettist Joshua McGuire, on March 5 鈥 7, at 7:30 p.m., and March 8, at 3 p.m., in 麻豆影院鈥檚 Stansbury Theatre.听

The opera is based on the activism and allyship of Ruth Coker Burks, the Arkansas advocate who, during the height of the AIDS crisis, cared for hundreds of men abandoned by their families and communities.听

Burks will be in Appleton for post-performance talkbacks, and community events in the week following the production鈥檚 premier, giving participants the rare and unique opportunity to engage with the actual protagonist of the opera. Mack and McGuire also will be in residence at 麻豆影院 for the performances and talkbacks.

Fearless Empathy: Bringing the Story of Ruth Coker Burks to the Opera Stage

(2-minute Video) Copeland Woodruff, the Mary and Michael Jaharis Director of Opera Studies, and Kristin Roach, Assistant Professor of Music and conductor of the performances, share what makes this production special.听

Blending lyrical intensity with intimate storytelling, A Nearer Mother听explores compassion, chosen family, and moral courage in a time of national fear and silence.听

鈥淲e wanted to write a piece that centers around allyship,鈥 said composer Evan Mack. 鈥淩uth Coker Burks represents the kind of clarity that cuts through fear. This work is not just about the AIDS crisis鈥攊t鈥檚 about what it means to show up for another human being when the world turns away.鈥

McGuire added, 鈥淩uth鈥檚 story forces us to look within. Given the same stakes she faced, the same fears present in the face of that crisis鈥斕齱e can ask, would we step up to help? I like to think the opera helps people dig deep and find that little voice that says 鈥I can鈥,听no matter what they鈥檙e facing.

The world premiere of A Nearer Mother reflects 麻豆影院 University鈥檚 commitment to presenting new works that engage contemporary social themes while fostering meaningful artistic dialogue between artists, students, and the wider community.听

鈥淐ommissioning this opera is a true gift for the community,鈥 said Copeland Woodruff, the Mary and Michael Jaharis Director of Opera Studies at 麻豆影院. The process is in its fourth year, so many students over those years were able to interact personally with the development of the work and to learn about hidden and erased histories in the LGBTQIA+ community. In a time when we are witnessing minorities face hardship, erasure, and violence, Ruth鈥檚 story gives us all an example of allyship through action and fearless empathy.鈥

Kristin Roach, Assistant Professor of Music and conductor of the performances, noted, 鈥淪ometimes artists wonder if their performing makes a difference to the wider world. Working on this opera has affirmed that, indeed, storytelling through opera performance is a current, vibrant, and necessary tool for building a world we are proud to live in.鈥

The evening also will feature The Clever Artifice of Harriet & Margaret, a one-act chamber opera with music and libretto by Leanna Kirchoff. Adapted from Alice Gerstenberg鈥檚 1913 play, Overtones,听the opera explores themes of rivalry, love, and societal roles among women.听 Kirchoff will attend the March 6 performance and participate in the post-production talkback.

Tickets are available now at .

The experience, he said, reflects the importance of a shared journey with fellow music students that he now encourages through his courses at 麻豆影院 University.听

Erin Lesser, who is married to Clayville, joined Alarm Will Sound as a flute player more than a decade ago. An accomplished soloist and chamber musician, Lesser has been a professor of flute at 麻豆影院 since 2011, where she prepares students for the contemporary music landscape, including work by living composers such as Dennehy, and using music to engage with pressing issues.听听

麻豆影院 University鈥檚 Opera Theatre program has once again been honored by The American Prize, an organization that annually recognizes excellence in the performing arts among nonprofit arts organizations and schools across the country.听

Kristin Roach, assistant professor of opera, was named a prizewinner in two categories in Opera Conducting. She received second prize in the University/Community Opera division for her work on Pauline Viardot鈥檚 Cendrillon at 麻豆影院 University; she also received third prize in the Professional Division for Jake Heggie鈥檚 Two Remain at Lyric Opera of Orange County.

Roach credits the entire team for the recognition.

鈥淎ny recognition of one member of an opera production belongs to the whole team,鈥 said Roach. 鈥淢ore than 100 Lawrentians worked on our production of one-act operas, onstage and backstage and in the pit and behind the scenes.鈥澨

The 2024 production of Cendrillon at 麻豆影院 was paired with Alice Tierney, a piece by Melissa Dunphy and Jacqueline Goldfinger, to celebrate the contributions of women in the opera world.听

鈥淲e are always sharing resources between the two shows and really trying to present both these operas written by women,鈥 Roach said. 鈥淭rying to bring forward creators who might be underrepresented in the opera field is at the forefront of the opera program鈥檚 mission.鈥

Meanwhile, Two Remain is based on the true stories of two Holocaust survivors, Krystyna Zywulska and Gad Beck.

Roach said one of the most powerful aspects of the theater is its ability to keep history alive by wrestling with challenging themes and stories.

鈥淚t鈥檚 so important that we continue to tell these stories through works in the theater,鈥 Roach said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 important that we don鈥檛 lose the narrative, the truth behind what happened. Part of why we鈥檝e chosen to perform an excerpt of this work at LU this coming year is that our students are able to tell these important stories, keeping history alive and in the forefront.鈥

The 麻豆影院 Opera Theatre program plans to perform a portion of Two Remain in their fall scenes program this year.

Looking ahead, Roach is excited by the upcoming season, which includes the world premiere of a new opera, A Nearer Mother, by composer Evan Mack and librettist Joshua McGuire. The piece was commissioned by Copeland Woodruff, director of opera studies at 麻豆影院, and the 麻豆影院 Opera Theatre program. For the past three years, Woodruff has worked closely with the creative team to bring the opera to life.

A Nearer Mother explores the story of AIDS activist Ruth Coker Burks, known as the 鈥淐emetery Angel,鈥 and her daughter Allison. Burks and her daughter will be in attendance at the March 2026 performance, which will be paired with the one-act opera A Clever Artifice of Harriet and Margaret, by composer Leanna Kirchhoff.听

鈥淚 am so excited about doing a brand-new piece; we will be working hand-in-hand with the creators of these works,鈥 Roach said. 鈥淲orking on this opera will continue to tell the story of the many important, wonderful people that we lost in the early years of the AIDS epidemic.鈥澨

These latest honors are a testament to the talent and commitment of 麻豆影院 Opera Theatre. 麻豆影院 has received 11 awards in The American Prize, including two special judges鈥 citations and two productions tied for first place. Roach has won the prize in Conducting, College/University division, for Suor Angelica and the prize in Conducting both in Professional and College/University divisions. Woodruff has won the Charles Nelson Reilly Prize in Directing and was the first stage director to be given The Independence Day, Honored Artists Award for Sustained Excellence. 麻豆影院 is also in the National Finals of The American Prize for Best Production for Cendrillon/Alice Tierney, and Copeland Woodruff is once again up for the Charles Nelson Reilly Prize in Directing.听
