Like many visitors to Bj枚rklunden, Thomas McKenzie 鈥95 came to 麻豆影院 University鈥檚 鈥渘orth campus鈥 to learn 鈥 and fell in love with the rustic charm of the woodsy retreat.听

As a 麻豆影院 University student, McKenzie was captivated by the infectious enthusiasm of his ecology teacher, Professor Maravolo, as he and his classmates explored the unique vegetation and natural beauty of the 441-acre lakeside campus in Door County, Wisconsin.听

Now serving as director of Bj枚rklunden, McKenzie has found much to adore鈥攍ike Jane鈥檚 Grotto, where he finds himself transported back in time to an ancient bluff-lined shore. Or a favorite ledge near the Memorial Grove that he says, 鈥渃aptures brilliant sunrise light across a low groundcover reddening with autumn鈥檚 progress.鈥澛

In the 50 years since 麻豆影院 University took stewardship of the land, Bj枚rklunden has provided a haven where students and the broader community come to seek knowledge, explore nature, and find respite from the breakneck pace of daily life. Today, Bj枚rklunden includes a two-story net zero carbon footprint lodge, an historic cottage, the handcrafted Boynton Chapel, a theatre in a garden, and 3.5 miles of hiking trails, all nestled along a mile of pristine Lake Michigan shoreline.

Whether it is the Door Shakespeare performers and their audiences in the garden, brides and grooms in the chapel, or students and educators in the Lakeside Seminar Room, Bj枚rklunden offers an ideal setting for connection and community.

Preserving the sanctuary聽

Bj枚rklunden vid Sj枚n (Swedish for Birch Grove by the Lake) was purchased in 1928 by Winifred and her first husband, Carleton Vail, as a summertime family retreat. Following Carleton鈥檚 death, Winifred spent time in Norway and wanted to bring a bit of it home.

After Winifred remarried, work began on building a chapel on the property modeled on a medieval stave church she had visited in Lillehammer, Norway. From 1939 to 1947, Winifred and her second husband, Donald Boynton, painstakingly added many beautiful details to the chapel, including 41 handpainted frescoes and its memorable carved wood altar, baptismal font, and other furnishings鈥攁 story she recounts in her book, Faith Builds a Chapel: The Story of an Adventure in Craftsmanship.听

Donald and Winifred Boynton bequeathed the property to 麻豆影院 University in 1963 with the vision of preserving the site as a 鈥渟anctuary for all鈥 and a place for peace and contemplation. They retained tenancy of the property during their lifetime.

After the Boyntons passed away 麻豆影院 University began its stewardship of the property in 1975; seminar programming began in 1980. However, an August 1993 electrical fire that gutted the original home led LU leaders to reevaluate their use the property.听

麻豆影院 University鈥檚 president at that time, Richard Warch, recognized that Bj枚rklunden was a 鈥渙nce in an institution鈥檚 history gift鈥 and that it needed to be incorporated into the full academic life of the university.听

In the aftermath of the fire, construction of a beautiful 37,000-square-foot lodge with guest rooms and dining and meeting spaces transformed Bj枚rklunden into the learning destination it is today.

Nourishing mind and spirit聽

Bj枚rklunden offers 麻豆影院 students space to retreat and focus. On weekends throughout the academic year, nearly 1,500 students have opportunities to join mentors and peers in group retreats focused on an aspect of their academic interests, athletic pursuits, or student life experiences.听

Additionally, Bj枚rklunden seminar program provides a vacation with a purpose for the general public, offering an array of three- and five-day learning opportunities for its public summer season, ranging from the arts and movies to history and science. Online seminars are also available on selected topics.听

As the founder of the program, Joe Hopfensperger, wrote: 鈥淗ere people join together to share the human experience 鈥 to nourish mind and spirit.鈥

A living learning laboratory

Looking to the future, Bj枚rklunden has launched its net zero initiative with the creation of wind and solar energy infrastructure and research into the carbon sequestration of the vast forest of the property.听

This remarkable endeavor offers unique learning opportunities for 麻豆影院 students while also helping to ensure Bj枚rklunden鈥檚 future by reducing energy costs and making positive contributions to the natural environment through carbon recapture.听

Today, 390 acres of the property are protected under a permanent conservation easement with the Door County Land Trust.

50 years and beyond

Since 1975, the north campus has grown to be an essential part of the 麻豆影院 University experience, a destination for lifelong learners, and a blessing to the broader local community through music, theatre, performance, and other public events.听

About half of Bj枚rklunden鈥檚 annual budget comes from seminar program fees and one quarter comes from donations to support 麻豆影院 student retreats and to maintain the grounds and buildings.听

To participate in maintaining this 麻豆影院 University treasure, please consider making a gift. Anyone who donates and/or volunteers becomes a . Those giving $500 or more are Boynton Society-level donors, which allows them early registration for the seminar program.

Setting the Stage for 麻豆影院鈥檚 Northern Campus

In 1978, Joseph Hopfensperger, a recently retired theater professor at 麻豆影院 heard rumors that the University was thinking about selling its northern property, Bj枚rklunden. Joe made it his mission to save it. It was his idea to use the land, the lake, and the lodge as a setting for adult seminars during the summer months 鈥 a stroke of genius that satisfied those suspicious of Bj枚rklunden鈥檚 purpose and thrilled others who imagined its hidden promise.

Though Joe was a theater professor, you would never know it by his gruff exterior. All of five feet seven, built like a fire plug, Joe was an ex-navy man 鈥 a submariner to be specific 鈥 who chain-smoked and wore rimless readers and a pork pie hat. His voice was basso profundo and he spoke with the confidence of a street fighter, though I never heard him utter a foul word. He was polite, a gentleman and a perfectionist. Even prudish. But tough as nails.听

I first met Joe when I applied for a summer job at Bj枚rklunden in 1980. This was only the second year Joe was in charge of the 400-plus acre property, but the first year he was to hold seminars 鈥 two of them, to be exact, one right after the other. The job description was for 麻豆影院 students who wanted to spend the summer in Door County cutting trees for firewood, giving tours of the Boynton Chapel, and serving as wait staff. I liked the Door County part. Sign me up! Other Lawrentians did not feel the same. I believe Joe had six people interview for six positions. He hired us all.

Work was not easy, but Joe didn鈥檛 care one way or the other. He believed these things built character and the best way to learn was by doing. The first day on the job, crack of dawn, he handed out leather gloves, hard hats, a batch of chain saws and told us to earn our keep and cut some cords. From there we changed into Scandinavian costumes and gave chapel tours. On odd hours and when required, we turned our attention to housekeeping and serving guests. Occasionally, Joe would invite us up to his lodge and regale us with stories of his friends, his days in the Navy and working in the 麻豆影院 theater department. Joe wasn鈥檛 married at the time and never grew tired of proclaiming his favorite song was聽Living Alone and Loving it. His thyroid challenged dog, Cobber, was forever at his side keeping him company.

But boy did he love his seminar project, and he treated it like a theatre production. Every detail was accounted for. He auditioned chefs. He went through multiple drafts of a weekly menu, curated the guests, recruiting them because this was all brand new and he wanted it so badly to work. Without it, he felt, there was no future for Bj枚rklunden. Breakfasts needed to be five-star. Place settings and table arrangements had to be impeccable, Thursday nights would be reserved for beef Wellington, Friday鈥檚 would be a traditional Door County fish boil (a skill the staff was required to master).听 The experiment worked. The seminars stuck, not so much for the meals (though they helped) but because of the classes, which Joe also curated. It was an inspired idea come to life, and Joe made it work.

The last time I set eyes on Joe was around 2015. He was in his late 80鈥檚 by then and slowing down. He had long since retired as Bj枚rklunden鈥檚 leader. Sitting across the main hall, he waved me over and then beckoned me to lean in closer so he could be heard. Something about Bj枚rklunden, maybe? That magical summer way back when the seminars came to life? No. Joe had attended a play reading in Vail Hall the day before and he wanted to know, 鈥淒o they really have to say all those four letter words?鈥

Sharing Bj枚rklunden Memories

by Debbie Sycamore鈥80

During 2025, the 50th anniversary year of 麻豆影院鈥檚 northern campus, we are hoping to tell the stories of meaningful moments that each of us has had at this incredibly special place. Perhaps your moment was an eye-opening seminar or meeting a thought-provoking new friend. Maybe your moment occurred while meditating in the chapel or exploring the many beautiful hiking trails. Just to get you inspired, I鈥檓 volunteering to start the sharing process by going back to the spring of 1979. Hope you enjoy reading my story.

It was in the spring of 1979 that I said 鈥測es鈥 to joining the 麻豆影院 summer work crew at Bj枚rklunden, acquired by 麻豆影院 four years earlier. The job description failed to mention anything about wielding Stihl 075 chainsaws and spending weekends in a dirndl and clogs giving tours of a stavkirke in the woods. Nor did it mention that we were to march in the Baileys Harbor July 4th parade 鈥 in clogs and dirndl no less.听 I hailed from NH/Mass. What the heck was a dirndl or a stavkirke? 聽 One of the many benefits of a liberal arts education includes taking leaps of faith and trusting you will figure it out. And so we did. Fellow crew members and I mastered pole saws on those infinite driveway cedars. I still know how to wield and sharpen the teeth of said chainsaw. A frosty cold Leinenkugel or Point Beer takes me back to hanging out in Adirondack chairs along the shores of Lake Michigan after a long day of work. The summer was magical and a study in contrasts that make me smile to this day. Grateful for all of it! For those who might wonder, I said yes to Bj枚rklunden in the summer of 1980 too!聽

Now it鈥檚 your turn to share a memory or two. We would like to publish as many of them as possible in the summer and fall newsletters. Short, long or in between are more than welcome along with any favorite Bj枚rklunden photos. Please email to:聽 teke.oreilly@lawrence.edu

A Look at Bj枚rklunden with President Rik Warch

As many of us recall, 麻豆影院鈥檚 14th president, Rik Warch, believed strongly that acquiring Bj艖rklunden was a unique opportunity for 麻豆影院 to create a northern campus for its students. Click on the link below to see and hear Rik relate the story of the destructive fire in 1993 and how that event turned into a major opportunity for the college to redevelop the site for enriched learning experiences.
